Play is a fundamental right for every child. It is core to how we develop from childhood into adulthood, learn to cooperate, communicate, share, test ourselves, and manage risk. It goes without saying that play spaces should, therefore, be fully inclusive and accessible.
Last month, Scope released some damning data about the basic inaccessibility of local playgrounds. It showed that inaccessible playgrounds are stopping too many disabled children from having fun and friendship. Here are the statistics:
49% of families with disabled children face accessibility problems with their local playground.
10% of parents of disabled children said their child got hurt using inaccessible equipment.
The charity has called on local authorities to work with families to create inclusive playgrounds and has created a playground accessibility map. Here's the report and a link to the map https://lnkd.in/ez66HSvV
At Earth Wrights, creating accessible play is fundamental to our design principles. We're continually educating ourselves and innovating so that we can provide children with the best opportunities for play and create inspiring and engaging play experiences that cater to a very wide range of abilities and needs. We take a holistic approach considering the diverse needs of all children, this means creating play spaces that recognise:
- PHYSICAL NEEDS: that are physically navigable for children of all abilities. This includes using accessible surfacing, ramps, wide pathways, and equipment that children with wheelchairs, prosthetics, or other mobility challenges can enjoy.
- SENSORY NEEDS: we understand that children experience the world in different ways. Our designs incorporate a variety of sensory elements, including textures, sounds, and visual cues, to stimulate and engage children with sensory processing differences.
COGNITIVE NEEDS: incorporating elements that encourage problem-solving, imaginative play, and social interaction at various difficulty levels.
SOCIAL & EMOTIONAL NEEDS: we design spaces that foster positive social interaction and belonging for all children. This includes creating spaces for both quiet contemplation and collaborative play.
Inclusive design is not about creating separate experiences. Our goal is to seamlessly integrate accessible features into the overall design, ensuring that every child feels welcome and has the opportunity to play alongside their peers.
By prioritising inclusion and accessibility, Earth Wrights play spaces become vibrant spaces where every child can thrive. We believe that play has the power to break down barriers, foster empathy, and create a more inclusive world, one swing, slide, and climbing challenge at a time.
