Our Director of Microbiome Solutions, Christian Roghi PhD MBA DipMC, tells us that microbiomes are “the foundation of health and resilience” and therefore have an “immense potential for a healthier future of the planet and all its inhabitants.” For humans, microbiomes influence our immune system, metabolic health, our mood, and much more, while environmental microbiomes have an impact on ecosystem diversity, agricultural success, and even climate change. Farming Innovation Programme award to Eagle Genomics to explore vital role of soil microbiomes and move towards greater sustainable agriculture in the UK. We are excited to announce the news, that we have been awarded a grant from DEFRA’s Farming Innovation Programme in partnership with Innovate UK’s Transforming Food Production Challenge which is aimed at improving arable farming, productivity, sustainability, and resilience with less environmental impact. Our award “A novel barometer for soil health including physical, chemical, and microbial elements to guide regenerative and sustainable agriculture’ started on the 1st January 2024 and will run for 24 months. We are delighted to be working closely with scientists at Rothamsted Research (Tim Mauchline (RRes-Roth), Martin Broadley @Andy Neal, @Stefan Haefele, @Cathy Thomas, @Rodrigo Alegria-Terrazas, @Ian Clark) , CABI (Matthew Ryan Alan Buddie) and Eagle Genomics’ e[datascientist] platform (Alex Mitchelll, Ryan Ames Aiswarya Rajasekharan) to advance our understanding of the effect of different agricultural practices on the functionalities soil indicators/signatures and promote regenerative farming practices. Advancing research on solutions to UK farming at a time when chemical fertilizers and pesticides are in the spotlight and enabling the next generation of soil tests to help farmers to apply practical solutions is critical to find alternatives whilst addressing the concerns of climate change. Soil Health testing laboratories have the appetite to use these signatures to provide more detailed analysis to guide farmers decision making. The outputs of this work will directly benefit farmers in the UK and guide the transition to more sustainable and restorative agriculture. Thanks to the fantastic team who made it all happen. Eagle Genomics are delighted to have collaborated with Henkel and produced a joint publication entitled “Beyond the Spin Cycle: Understanding the Impact of Probiotics on Home Care using End-to-End Automated Microbial Metatranscriptomic Analysis”. The pioneering and highly innovative collaborative work between Henkel and Eagle Genomics, used Eagle Genomics Al-augmented e[datascientist] platform to analyze metatranscriptome based profiles of washing machines using regular detergents treated with and without probiotics. The analysis suggested new insights on how probiotics interfered with pathogen and multi-drug resistant bacterial accumulation and supported beneficial bacteria for a healthy human skin microbiome. Regenerative agriculture is everyone’s business now. Narratives at COP28 this week, resound with a very similar set of important messages. With a meaningful and scientific understanding of the biology of the soil, we can capture its real value. As part of a wider ecosystem of vibrant actors, we hope to help drive incentives for greater planetary health. We are very excited to share our new thought-provoking article, ‘Natural Capital: Economic Incentives and Science-Based Targets for Integrated Soil Microbiome Solutions in Agriculture’ as we join many others across the globe, in celebration of World Soil Day 2023 today. The article reflects the outputs of a successful internship in 2023 undertaken by Finn Crawford (Harvard University) in conjunction with Dr Yvonne Pinto who leads AgBio at Eagle. This is an important and unique analytical piece empowering broad audiences in agriculture, including advocates of nature-based solutions, restorative and regenerative agriculture, farmers, and researchers to unravel the economic and environmental benefits of healthy soils and the agricultural practices that support them. Alongside shedding light on the complex interactions between soil microorganisms, crops and environmental factors, this article has the potential to enable justification and a greater level of adoption of regenerative agriculture.
