Container traffic nearly matches monthly record in August August was another bumper month for loaded container traffic, with shipments very nearly matching the highest ever total recorded in May this year, according to the latest data from Container Trades Statistics Limited (CTS). CTS’ numbers show that loaded volumes increased 5.3% YoY in August to reach 16.05 mteu, about 1,300 teu below May’s peak (see charts). On a MoM basis, world traffic increased 2.6% in August. The container market has now seen 13 consecutive months with YoY gains and the latest results mean the YTD total after eight months reached 113.7 mteu, an increase of 6.7% on the same period last year. Every region is in positive YTD growth territory so far this year, although there is a fairly wide high-low spread. The fastest growth for total loaded shipments (imports and exports combined) has occurred in North America, up 11% YTD, while South Asia/Middle East has the lowest YTD growth at 2%. North America’s position at the top of the growth charts is largely due to a 14% YTD increase in imports, which tops the inbound regional rankings. Asia sits at the top of the export growth rankings with a 9% YTD improvement. Drewry Shipping Consultants Ltd is hosting a FREE webinar briefing on Thursday 17 October 2024 to discuss some of the highlights from our latest Container Forecaster report, which will include guidance on our revised outlooks for global port handling: https://lnkd.in/e9nBsx3G #CTS #Drewry #containershipping #forecasts

US port strikes are suspended for now, everyone Talk about uncertainty and disruptions... Just 2 days after the start of the port strikes, the association representing port employers released a statement saying that "the International Longshoremen’s Association (ILA) and the United States Maritime Alliance, Ltd. (USMX) have reached a tentative agreement on wages and have agreed to extend the Master Contract until January 15, 2025, to return to the bargaining table to negotiate all other outstanding issues. Effective immediately, all current job actions will cease, and all work covered by the Master Contract will resume." It does not mean that a firm new contract will be agreed, but it does reduce the risk of US East/Gulf port and supply chain chaos and freight cost increases/surcharges for now. #ports #containershipping #reliability

If the conflict between Israel and Iran and their allies further escalates, and even if it remains limited to the region, it will significantly impact dry bulk shipping. In 2023, the region exported 262 million tonnes of dry bulk cargo and imported a similar quantity, with total trade exceeding 500 million tonnes. While a large portion of this trade is intra-regional, there has also been substantial international trade, including with India and China. If shipping activities are halted for an extended period, it could disrupt nearly two trillion tonne miles of shipping demand, representing 8.7% of the global dry bulk shipping demand. Moreover, traffic through the Suez Canal will be further affected. The monthly movement of dry bulk vessels through the Canal has decreased from nearly 800 ships in December 2023 to 260 in June 2024, driven by fears of escalating regional tensions. The Suez movement could further decline. A detailed analysis will follow...
