A 2-year project to dismantle, clean and cut up 46 absorbers removed from the Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR) has been completed ahead of schedule, saving the company over £200,000. Hamish Boyd, Project Manager said: “This is an example of how a project can go smoothly when excellent teamwork is present throughout the project. The completion of this project has removed a significant radiological hazard from PFR." #NuclearDecommissioning #HazardRemoval #Teamwork
NRS Dounreay
Oil and Gas
Dounreay is responsible for the safe and secure clean-up of the Dounreay nuclear site.
About us
Dounreay was the UK’s centre of fast reactor research and development from 1955 until 1994 and is now Scotland’s largest nuclear clean-up and demolition project. Dounreay is a division of Nuclear Restoration Services. This was where some of the nation’s leading scientists and engineers experimented with plutonium, uranium and other metals to give Britain the knowledge to generate electricity using a more advanced type of nuclear reactor. Their research and development is now complete. The equipment and materials they used to gain this knowledge is being packed up and the environment restored by a new generation of staff skilled in nuclear clean-up. Today, Dounreay is part of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Group and a site of construction, demolition and waste management, all of it designed to return the site to as near as practicable its original condition.

The Dounreay Employees Charity Fund was established in the 1980s to make donations to organisations and charities within Caithness and north Sutherland. The fund recently donated £700 to the Fusion Display team in Thurso which helped the team to go to Gymfest, the UK's premier non-competitive gymnastic display festival and one of the most popular events on the Scottish Gymnastics calendar. #CommunitySupport #DounreayEmployees #CharityFund

#FlashbackFriday to 1955 and the building of the iconic Dounreay Fast Reactor dome. This image shows 2 of the 300 metal plates used to construct the dome being lifted into position before being welded into place. They welded 2 of the plates together in a workshop which halved the number of lifts the team had to make. #NuclearHistory #EngineeringFeats #HistoricSites

Our apprentices were out and about in Thurso today, working alongside Venture North and other volunteers to meet and greet the first cruise passengers of the year to Caithness. Dounreay encourages its early careers programme members to participate in community projects, and helping with this project over the summer months will be a great learning experience for them as well as benefiting the wider community. #LearningExperience #CommunityProjects #VolunteerWork

In April 1958 Dounreay purchased the property which became the Viewfirth Sports and Social Club in Thurso. The venue was a hub of activity for Dounreay workers and their families. In this #FlashbackFriday photograph you can see excited youngsters getting their prizes on sports day with happy parents looking on.

#FlashbackFriday to 1961 and the opening of the Naver House Apprentices' Hostel. The 70 bed facility housed the apprentices who worked at Dounreay and I am sure many people have fond memories of their time there. #WorkplaceMemories #Apprentices #Nostalgia

The Dounreay Communities Fund donated £1,000 to the Caithness Badminton Club. The funding assisted the club to host an invitation tournament and with their travel costs to take part in the Intercounty Shetland competition. The invitation tournament was held over 2 days in Wick with 76 players taking part, travelling from as far north as Shetland to as far south as Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen. #CommunitySupport #DounreayCommunitiesFund
