The world is not #Static or #linear. Many companies will ignore #dynamics, but quite often it is very important to truly understand what is going on. Subsequently as #Designers, #Engineers and #Consultants, we are often asked to deal with real world dynamic non-linear problems to solve our client problems. Within the world of structural mechanics we use the latest technology, from the likes of #ABAQUS and #ANSYS. We also use #ADINA (advanced dynamic incremental nonlinear analysis), which has a cutting edge multi-discipline solver covering structural mechanics, heat transfer, fluid dynamics and electromagnetism, which can all be coupled. We have completed a fair few crush analyses recently - this analysis is an #ADINA benchmark which can be solved in both implicit and explicit solvers - and if we need to, we can switch between if the physics require. This problem is fully non-linear, highly dynamic time history, non-linear materials, large geometry, self contact. Some dynamic projects we have completed and coming through the system include rock crushing machine design, design of high tech screens accounting for impact, energy absorbers and crushing, high energy slugging loads and design for pipelines, vibration segregation machine design, structural harmonic design of structural systems for machine placement, rotating equipment and associated structural assessment and design, piping, structural and equipment dynamic response, and more. We have been using Bentley #STAAD for a number of years, and have also used #ADINA for many years. Since ADINA is now a #Bentley product, we are also looking at the STAAD to ADINA capabilities which will boost our ability to deal with complex #Civil / #Structural problems. #Seismic #Response and #Dynamics are not new to DOCAN, and in this benchmark example, we apply response spectrum loads to the bridge foundations and then review the overall dynamic response of the bridge. Imagine being able to get into the connection details directly from the STAAD model and into a real dynamic FEA model natively. #CREEP - the phenomena where a material goes through permanent deformation over time whilst under stress, generally with stress below yield. DOCAN have completed many project where CREEP is a key feature of design, life and failure. In one of our benchmarks - we completed a CREEP assessment with FEA. In this case we use the cutting edge #ADINA #FEA system from #Bentley to model CREEP and determine the CREEP strain over time, which we then use in real complex modelling of systems. Hand in hand, we also use replication within metallurgy to assess actual CREEP #damage which then leads to failure. CREEP is seen in #metals, #polymers, #concrete and many other materials - and is not always associated with #hot!! Have you ever tried to #design #equipment or a #product which includes repeated #impacts, but still need to account for #Fatigue #Life and #Damage Tolerance. Some of our clients have this issue and some of their equipment would fail catastrophically - working with them, we have been able to make their equipment work, gave them the life and the damage tolerance they needed (not the first project, and not the last of this complex nature). Using traditional, #implicit #FEA for this #dynamic event would be impossible, however by using #explicit FEA we are able to capture the full transfer of #energy through the system and the relative #speeds of all of the different components at any point in time. The #impact event puts large loads through some components, giving a single #high #tensile stress value. Other components it causes to #vibrate, which can accumulate many reversed stress #cycles in a single strike. How do we know which stresses are most damaging and where we should focus our design effort? DOCAN's experienced engineers use complementary pieces of software which allows us to use an #advanced #fatigue #life algorithm accounting for mean stress correction, bilinear stress states, and complex loading cycles on every single element of the model producing a contour plot of life for the entire system, which can be readily interrogated and the design adjusted where necessary to achieve the required life. Using DOCAN's technology stack, we can complete full implicit, and in this case Explicit analysis, and also use special algorithms to assess fatigue for these extremely dynamic events, where many vibrations waves can occur potentially causing damage.
