Meet Haneef, Israel and Kehinde, three interns working at STFC this summer as part of the 10,000 Black Interns programme. This year, we’re hosting ten interns through the programme, based at Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, Daresbury Laboratory and the UK Astronomy Technology Centre. Haneef Shittu is an electrical and electronic engineering student interning at the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source. “The highlight of working here so far is simply the atmosphere. With flexible hours, no strict dress code and a facility that feels like a campus, it is very easy to settle in. “Also being able to see all the major equipment up close and understanding how they work is a surreal experience.” Israel is working at RAL Space as a Quantum Sensors Intern, where he’s using software to spot patterns in experiments at the atomic level. “I am hoping to understand the public sector more and also see if a more academic route is a possible career path, especially in Science and Technology.” Kehinde’s placement is at STFC ASTeC at Daresbury Laboratory, where he’s working on an inventory management system for the CLARA particle accelerator. “The highlight of my internship has been the incredible support from my team and line manager. A brighter future for Harwell. We are excited to see the newly installed solar panels that cover the entire roof of Diamond Light Source are now fully operational. Diamond’s roof covers an area of 32,000m2 which offers an exceptional opportunity to maximise energy efficiency through these panels. The energy generated by the solar panels is an annual supply of 2.3GWh/y. This output amounts to around 5% of the facility’s total annual energy consumption and will mean yearly savings of some half a million pounds. This will additionally contribute to energy savings of more than £2M per year. Gianluigi Botton, CEO of Diamond Light Source, said: “The completed solar panel installation demonstrates our commitment to lowering the carbon footprint of our world-changing science. This is significant in the high-tech, specialised research and development sector that Diamond operates in. The Government’s Net Zero ambition will require substantial additional investment, but we are working to develop an achievable roadmap for this. Earlier this year, members of our Detector and Electronics division travelled to Grenoble, France to conduct experiments on HEXITEC technology at the European Synchrotron Facility. HEXITEC stands for High Energy X-Ray Imaging Technology. It is a hyperspectral X-ray imaging detector (measuring the energy of each X-ray in the image) developed by our department. The experiments completed at the ESRF's ID19 beamline are part of an international collaboration to successfully conduct full field X-ray fluorescence computed tomography (FFXRF-CT) with increased performance. FFXRF-CT is a novel imaging technique that can be used to sense different elements deep inside samples or tissues, providing an extra dimension of energy information that is hidden when using conventional X-rays. This technology has potential applications in areas such as geology, catalysis, biological imaging, metallurgy and energy storage materials. 🌡🚫 Conventional PZT piezoceramics – used in everything from spark generators and parking sensors to medical ultrasonics – can’t function at high temperatures, limiting their industrial applications. They’re also lead-based materials, which face legal restrictions due to their toxicity to people and the environment. In light of these issues, there is considerable interest in developing lead-free, high temperature piezoelectric materials. BF-BT ceramics are promising candidates and researchers at The University of Manchester have been seeking to understand the mechanisms of how we can process and modify the composition of these materials to improve their properties. Yesterday, a crowd of hundreds gathered at the APS to welcome the facility’s brighter days ahead. The APS has emerged from a year-long shutdown and is ready for its second act, generating X-ray beams that are up to 500 times brighter than the beams of the original APS. “The Advanced Photon Source has been a preeminent destination for the world’s scientists for decades, and with its expanded capabilities, it will continue to set the bar for X-ray research for decades to come,” said Geri Richmond, U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)’s undersecretary for science and innovation. https://lnkd.in/gXzY7raw
