Did you know that the majority of consumers of Islamic finance in the UK are actually not Muslims? Why? 📈 Islamic finance done well gets uptake regardless of faith. Usually this looks like giving a market-leading risk-adjusted return. 🏦 That's why most of the investors in Islamic banks (e.g. Qatar Islamic Bank (QIB), Gatehouse Bank plc, Al Rayan Bank) and HSBC's Amanah fund are actually non-Muslims. They find these products when they screen for returns on comparison websites. So the two biggest client pools are actually mostly non-Muslim. Because of (generally) market-leading outcomes. So is that it then? Our approach as an industry should be just about market-leading products? No. If we are to be truly faithful, when we need a combination of ALL of the following: 1️⃣ Market leading returns/product. This is table stakes. 2️⃣ Proudly sharing our difference. No we are not just a bland investment product - we are a faith-inspired, ethical product rooted in community. This product should be a gateway to this great treasure trove. 🏆 Finance is just the opener - there is an entire way of life to be discovered. 3️⃣ A discourse, branding, and positioning that is inviting yet radical. "Invite to the way of your Lord with wisdom and good instruction." Miss any 1 of these 3 and you end up with uninspiring marketing that misses the greatest opportunity our industry has: non-Muslims. 📣 I wrote a book and it just got published 🙂 In my gap year I travelled to Egypt to study Arabic and to aid my learning I started translating the collection of poems penned by Imam Shafi'i - one of the 4 most revered Islamic scholars. 15 years later, after many abortive attempts, it is an absolute pleasure to see the book come to life, with the invaluable input from Moustafa Elqabbany. A hard copy version will be available from Turath Publishing by the end of the year. For now a free download is available online (link below). The entire project is charitable and in the aid of celebrating Arabic poetry, Imam Shafi'i's genius, and to seek wisdom from his advice. I hope you all benefit!
