Always great to read such posts 👇
Last Friday, I had a truly special day, thanks to ARK Rewilding Nederland. They invited me to be the opening speaker at their event celebrating their 35th anniversary and 35 years since the birth of Dutch #Rewilding. Addressing an audience of 250 rewilders was a real honour. It was an opportunity to celebrate the transformative changes brought about by a group of pioneering #ecologists. The topic of my talk was the importance of radical and progressive professionals in driving ecological and social progress. I argued that without their imagination, forward-thinking, innovation, and action, our world would stagnate and degrade. I distinguished between a radical and a progressive professional and organisation as a prelude to reflecting on how ARK Natuurontwikkeling's rewilding demonstration projects not only gave form and meaning to radical new conservation science ideas but also had a transformative impact beyond rewilding and #nature conservation. The festival was held at De Vasim Nijmegen, a repurposed industrial icon where ARK and other progressive companies are located. During the break, we picnicked on an island at the city end of the 5000-hectare river rewilding project, initiated by in 1989 following a gift of 5 hectares of land. They envisioned a project to restore the braided floodplain processes of the river Waal to reduce the 'climate-heightened' risk of flooding to #Nijmegen. They financed the whole project through a deal with brick factories to remove the silts which had accumulated behind the summer dykes. It’s remarkable! The Gelderse Poort project transitioned Dutch Delta management from a river engineering model to a living rivers model and seeded and demonstrated the concept of nature-based solutions. This was specified at the 2009 #CBD COP as a paradigm shift integrating natural processes into policy and practice to address complex global challenges. I reminded the audience just how revolutionary this was (and is) and shared my sense of awe - as an Englishman - of what the Dutch rewilding community have achieved. Noting that we can't even bring ourselves to release beavers outside fenced enclosures! More seriously, I congratulated ARK on being a progressive organisation that has achieved radical change, and reflected that I couldn't think of another conservation NGO of a similar size that has achieved such outcomes. So, this Friday, I invite you to reflect on what it means to be a progressive professional and organisation. If you want to hear more of my views on this and whether rewilding needs to maintain its progressive and radical edge, you can check out my presentation at this link https://lnkd.in/evCsYKvx It starts 27 minutes in. Thanks to Esther Blom Lars Soerink for their invite and fab organising, to my fellow speakers David Hetherington Marc Argeloo Arie Trouwborst Emilie Reuchlin and everyone who came for a memorable day. As always feedback appreciated. CreditNature
