An award-winning, Hull-based theatre company making multi-sensory theatre for audiences living with PMLD!
About us
Concrete Youth is an award-winning, Hull-based theatre company dedicated to creating ground-breaking and exciting multi-sensory theatre for audiences living with profound multiple learning disabilities (PMLD). Partnered with Artsmark, our education department provides excellent bespoke workshops, private and group sensory stories. So far, hundreds of audiences across five continents have enjoyed Concrete Youth's beautiful sensory work, as well as countless students at special needs schools throughout the UK. Concrete Youth was established in 2019 after Artistic Director, Daniel Swift, a Drama teacher in a specialist school at the time, noticed the lack of cultural provision across the industry for people with profound and multiple learning disabilities. The company was founded to provide much needed provision for this audience, promote inclusion, upskill artists in inclusive theatre, and raise awareness on the lack of access for audiences with PMLD in theatre. Ran by a core team of three, world-class inclusive theatre specialists, the company has won numerous awards, such as the Big Ideas Award, and been nominated for many others, including a National Diversity Award (awaiting result) and an OffWestEnd ONCOMM Award (awaiting result). Our productions to date include: To the Moon and Back (2019), Shebaa's Adventure to Jopplety How (2020) and Winter Wonderland (2020). Press and audience reviews include: - ★★★★★ "The emphasis on inclusivity shines throughout; the effort taken to ensure the audience is prepared, comfortable and engaged is obvious and it seems that no detail has been forgotten." (TheatreWeekly) - ★★★★ "Pretty much impossible to find a fault" (LondonTheatre1) - "It's works like this that fill me with confidence for the future of the industry." (kiralcurtis.com) - "Thank you. Thank you. Thank you" (Teacher) - "I can't thank you enough. I've never seen anything like this. We can't wait to come back" (Carer)
