COMSUBNATO is the submarine operations focal point for NATO, encompassing operations, exercises, doctrine, and advocacy and is the submarine branch of Allied Maritime Command (MARCOM). MARCOM is the central command of all NATO maritime forces and the Commander MARCOM is the prime maritime advisor to the Alliance. When directed by the Supreme Allied Commander Europe (SACEUR), it provides the core of the headquarters responsible for the conduct of maritime operations. The command is based at the Northwood Headquarters in northwest London.

MARCOM’s Rear Admiral Thomas Wall appeared in a 30 minute interview on Swedish TV News show “Rapport”, on channel SVT. Commander, Submarines NATO was interviewed alongside the Commander of the Swedish Submarine Flotilla, Captain Paula Wallenburg. Rear Admiral Thomas Wall was in Sweden attending the Submarines Commanders Conference, which happened to coincide with the Turkish Parliament accepting the accession of Sweden to NATO. “Sweden joining NATO will increase NATO’s operational capability,” said Rear Admiral Wall on hearing the news. “Today we have submarines from 13 nations, with Sweden we will be 14. The annual NATO Submarine Commander’s Conference (SCC) hosted by RADM Thomas Wall as COMSUBNATO took place from 26-28 September 2023 in Istanbul, Türkiye as guests of RDML Timur Yilmaz in his role as COMTURSUBGROUP and COMSUBBLACK. SCC provides an opportunity for the submarine leadership of all contributing NATO nations and partners to discuss NATO submarine doctrine, plans and policy, operations, and exercises. These discussions and presentations are critical to the NATO submarine community in maintaining alignment and to “train the way we will fight” in the maritime domain.
