We’re excited to hear that Rusty Design Limited, an award-winning product design company that our Hartree Centre Cardiff Hub worked with recently on a ”Project” (a 1-3 month collaboration with our Data Scientists) have been successful in acquiring Innovate UK funding for exploring the use of generative AI in the media sector. David Tuxworth and Cai Davies used their knowledge to recommend the most promising approaches for implementing generative AI in object creation, texture assignment, and creating a library of digital objects. This was followed by implementing these techniques using the company’s object models. The guidance our Cardiff Hub provided helped Rusty Design with acquiring Innovate UK funding, with Bleddyn Williams (Director) stating “Without the support of the Hartree Centre Cardiff Hub, we wouldn't have been able to access the expertise we needed and unlock the path forward for our future projects around generative AI, readying us for commercialisation. Our interactions have paved the way to a new Innovate UK project.” We support SMEs with tailored approaches, using our academic connections and knowledge of further funding to best suit your needs. The creative sector can gain significant benefits from AI assistance. Our Hartree Centre Cardiff Hub recently collaborated with Accordion Innovation Ltd on an “Assist” (a 12-hour partnership led by our Data Scientists), focusing on the application of AI in smart audio editing. Accordion’s unique technology allows audiences to control the duration of audio or video content without losing its structure, tone, or feel—and without simply speeding it up. Cai Davies and Marc Roig Vilamala explored ways to use AI for automated, intelligent editing cuts to shorten podcast durations while preserving the essence of the content. This innovative approach opens opportunities for Accordion to enhance its product offering, making it more efficient and scalable. Andy Taylor, Accordion's Founder, commented, “Working with Hartree has been very positive. Their expertise has uncovered vast potential for AI to help Accordion in targeted ways that will enable it to work more efficiently and scale effectively.” Accordion is now considering further collaboration with us on a “Project” (a 1-3 month initiative), to continue developing its smart content editing capabilities. Our Cardiff Hub’s Demystifying AI event is less than a month away! We're excited to meet the businesses who have signed up. The schedule for the event is here - with talks, demos and other activities throughout the day! Here's a quote from an attendee at our previous event in July: "The Demystifying Chatbots and LLMs event was a fantastic day with a lot of detailed information on AI, how it works and it's development. The team were all very welcoming, lovely, and easy to talk to. "The content was tailored at points to the attendees which meant you could get the most out of the day. The demo section of the day was also great and showed attendees what is possible with current LLMs. I would definitely recommend to anyone looking to go deeper into AI for their business" For those who haven't signed up yet, we still have tickets available here 👉 https://lnkd.in/evjfvnFk Cardiff Capital Region , Tramshed Tech, SETsquared Partnership, Creative Cardiff, Media Cymru, MediWales, Wales Cyber Innovation Hub, Busnes Cymru / Business Wales, Innovate UK, Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd, Cardiff School of Computer Science and Informatics, STFC, STFC Hartree Centre, #sbarc|#spark

Healthcare is a sector where AI innovations are already making its way to patients. Agile Kinetic Limited are the developers of MoveLab, a remote movement rehabilitation software letting patients recover from home and providing clinicians with rich data. Our Hartree Centre Cardiff Hub recently completed an “Assist” (a 12-hour collaboration) with the team. Data Scientists Asad Javied, PhD and Cai Davies explored the application of advanced signal processing for feature engineering and further provided an implementation of a Gait Recognition paper using open data sets. This allowed for the Gait to be read from a waist-mounted smartphone during six different rehabilitative activities. This implementation helped improve Agile Kinetic’s software, with Peter Bishop (Managing Director) stating “Collaborating with the Hartree team has been excellent. Their data scientists' expertise quickly enhanced our advanced signal processing and machine learning capabilities, leading to improved feature detection and activity recognition.” Agile Kinetic are continuing to work with us on more healthcare ideas, including on a ”Project” (a 1-3 month collaboration with our Data Scientists) using AI to improve speech analysis. Principal Engineer @ SIMBAChain ◆ PhD in trustworthy data & AI accountability ◆ 🏴 AirBNB Host ◆ Tree farmer
Last week I celebrated graduating with a PhD from Cardiff School of Computer Science and Informatics. It was so lovely to wear a special outfit around Cardiff, and walk across the stage, supported by my family and friends. I started my PhD journey when I was 50, as a bit of a career reboot, and mostly found it to be a great journey of technical adventure. The latter parts were tough, and I found resilience I never knew existed in me. The reboot was successful, no blue screen of death, and I’m now invigorated working in a challenging engineering role with colleagues - and new friends - at SIMBA Chain. I appreciate that I was lucky to have this opportunity, and forever grateful to family, friends and everyone who supported me on the adventure.

Great to see this from one of our MSc Computing and IT students - well done, Selman! Gwych gweld hyn gan un o'n myfyrwyr MSc Cyfrifiadureg a TG - da iawn chi, Selman! 👏
Over the last few months, I've enjoyed meeting and working with some of the nicest people from all walks of life. From carrying out Flutter and C development lectures for the brightest students in the country with the help of amazing university staff members to meeting master perfumers across the UK, whose work I always appreciated. These are two distinct fields that I've never imagined myself treading between, and as I wrap up my placement role; I have been thinking of joining the two fields in my MSc dissertation through a novel tech solution to a perfumer's struggle, or something along those lines. I would like to appreciate the people I have connected with throughout these experiences. Thank you Roja Dove and Margaret Grodecka for hosting me over on the 6th floor of Harrods and all the best with your ventures, your work has always been inspiring. And thanks to Ramalakshmi Vaidhiyanathan for being around for the students of the Seren Network, it was an absolute pleasure to work with you on the app development workshop. Elaine Haigh, I never thought I would teach Cybersecurity this soon, but it was fun and I'm glad it turned out amazing. And of course, thanks to the team for arranging the gigs over the last academic year, and for tolerating my occasional tech/perfumery lectures in the office.

Industry and External Engagement Officer at School of Computer Science and Informatics (Cardiff University)
What a fantastic event we hosted today in the #NationalSoftwareAcademy and Julian Hodge Building at Cardiff University / Prifysgol Caerdydd in collaboration with Cardiff Commitment (Victoria Highgate (Poole)) The Technology Behind Our Technology. It's not often, if ever, you really think about what is going on behind the scenes...or should that be screens...of the tech we all use day in, day out. Be it a smartphone, laptop, monitor, tablet, car ICE, the list goes on - there is something in all of it (in fact ~8k in a car!) that makes it...work. The #CompoundSemiconductor (CS). Today we were very pleased to welcome Manoj kesaria (Cardiff University School of Physics & Astronomy), Howard Rupprecht (CSconnected), Annie Mathew (Space Forge) and Jessica Leigh Jones MBE (iungo Solutions) to give four brilliantly interesting and very engaging keynote presentations about what the CS is, its history, journey, uses, real (and surprising!) applications, and ultimately the scale of the development and manufacturing sector that we have right here in #SouthWales. We were delighted this event brought in pupils from local schools and colleges to promote the #opportunities there are within the field to pursue a successful #career around compound #semiconductors. The got to experience Cardiff University, our great spaces and colleagues, whilst understanding the breadth and variety of careers they could enter, and the routes available to them to start their journey. We were delighted to be able to support the event and all delegates attending through our Cardiff School of Computer Science and Informatics #Outreach team of Delivery Officers, and our Directors of Admissions Louise Knight and Carolina Fuentes being part of the exhibitor area, telling them all about our degree programmes we run, and the ways in which we can support local schools and colleges being the #Cardiff hub for Technocamps. Thank you also to Caryn Grimes and her team from (Cardiff Capital Region Skills Partnership ), Jp Hadden (Cardiff University School of Engineering), Dave Reed (Coleg y Cymoedd), Camille Colombier (CSconnected), Hannah Fullegar and Alex L. (Compound Semiconductor Applications (CSA) Catapult, and Nick Aiston (Cardiff and Vale College) for being part of the exhibitor zone. Our very own Jenny 🏴 co-delivered a very successful #C Fundamentals workshop, and Stew Edmondson (UK Electronics Skills Foundation (UKESF)) delivered An Introduction to #Microcontrollers workshop to participants to give them a taste of the new compound semiconductor #skills #bootcamp being delivered by iungo Solutions this summer! I'm pleased I've made some great contacts to foster and develop relationships and partnerships within this sector. But, ultimately, if we have given just a few pupils the appetite to pursue a career in CS in South Wales, be this directly through a bootcamp, apprenticeship, or one of our prestigious degree programmes, it's been a success 😎
