[Scheme Update] King Charles III Footpath Colas has completed improvements on the Cheshire section which will form part of the King Charles III footpath, a 2,700-mile National Trail connecting landscapes in England. In collaboration with Cheshire West and Chester Council, the project improved an existing coast path situated between the Flintshire and Wirral borders, with a strong emphasis on environmental sustainability throughout the process. The section of the path is integral to the King Charles III England Coast Path, noted for its ecological significance, as parts lie within a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) and the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds (RSPB) Burton Mere Wetlands. Following discussions with RSPB and Natural England, it was agreed that a granite stone path would be installed to stabilise the embankment to futureproof the route against coastal terrain and tidal waters. In addition, no materials would be removed from the site, aiding sustainability ecology and carbon elements of the location. The main construction phase was carefully scheduled between January and March to align with environmental considerations, with work continuing throughout the year to stabilise the route through marshy areas, raising the path above waterlogged ground, and improving drainage. With the completion of the improvements, the Cheshire section of the King Charles III footpath is now open to the public.

[Award win 🏆] Highways Awards Our award-winning 'Period Dignity: Ending the Stigma' campaign has scooped another accolade, winning the ‘Health, Wellbeing and Inclusion’  award at the 21st Highways Awards on the 24 September 2024 in London. The 'Period Dignity: Ending the Stigma' campaign aims to create an environment where women feel included, and that there is better understanding of this and other women’s physical and mental health in a highway’s workplace. The campaign is focussed on the importance of normalising conversations about gender-based health disparities, and empowering women to discuss their health openly in the workplace. Research from Initial Washroom Hygiene found that almost half of women would be hesitant to talk about periods with their manager, at Colas we’re committed to creating a healthy working environment within our business. Congratulations to the team!

[Exciting News! 📣] Highways UK Excellence Awards Shortlist Colas, in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council, has been shortlisted for the Net-Zero Award at the upcoming Highways UK Excellence Awards. This nomination is in recognition of the use of the Recycol low carbon cold-recycling solution for local to strategic roads. Recycol is a cold-applied in-situ recycling process, delivered using a train of resurfacing vehicles that move along a road, mixing the planed asphalt with new emulsion in real-time, repurposing 100% of the binder course into new road surfaces. In October 2023, in collaboration with the Cheshire West and Chester Council, Colas carried out the first demonstrator of the Recycol process on a 2km section of a major A road, the A41. Ahead of the project, Colas technical experts developed and adapted the internationally used Recycol solution, creating a formulised mixture for use on the major road, decreasing the curing time of the binder. The project resulted in significant carbon and cost savings, and reduced inconvenience to road users. We look forward to the award ceremony in October! Colas will also be attending the Highways UK exhibition, where specialist teams will be on hand to discuss the Recycol process in detail. Visitors are invited to learn more about this innovative solution, its benefits, and how it can be implemented in various road projects.
