⛔ Nobody likes to have a door shut in their face, do they? But for the 66% of 16-18-year-olds who leave school without any work experience, it can feel just like that. Download our guide to open doors for young talent!
Coherent Cities helps people and teams working on cities to be more effective. That may mean connection, fresh approaches, team or individual confidence – or just recalibrating how we work together. To do that, we combine professional development and facilitation expertise with sector intelligence, lateral thinking, clear communication and a straightforward approach to projects and relationships. If you’re - working with stakeholders on a contentious issue or place - wrestling with strategic direction or diversity stall-out - trying to form or reform your board - needing to hone your team’s communication or collaboration skills - in a bid or reporting slump …we can help. We work with internal and multi-party groups, from front-line and community representatives to CEOs and council leaders. We help your own team build skills, confidence and trust so they’re more self-sufficient. And we try to make every experience as positive as possible – including online!

Lasting change is created when we are accountable for the gaps between social value initiatives. In the built environment sector, social value projects pass through many hands so defining a long-term mission is vital. In our new report, we call this approach "carrying the baton". We found several great examples of multi-partner projects that cohered around a mission to create social value. One is the Royal Docks regeneration where public and private sector and community organisations work together to achieve long-term social value legacy. Two projects exemplified "carrying the baton" by training community members to research issues affecting their area so they could work with stakeholders in the planning and delivery of developments. The UCL Citizen Science Academy trains people with the skills and tenacity to stay involved in projects do they can positively impact the place they live. Young Researchers-in-Residence was a twelve-month research project that enabled young people to take an active role in local placemaking. They were equipped with the skills needed to gather evidence of young people’s experiences of the public realm. The project was delivered by LSE Cities, Make Space for Girls and Countryside Partnerships. "We’re keeping the community connected to people who can make a difference," says citizen scientist Twinkle Jayakumar. "Communities have been neglected for so long, and this is a chance to connect the dots.” To find out more, download the report, "Social Value: How to be a good ancestor". It’s packed with case studies, advice and resources for developing a social value strategy. See the link in the comments below. 🦋 🎤 Got happy butterflies ahead of a sparky speaking gig April 30th, organised by the fab Jenna Goldberg of Hill & Knowlton. It's a first "Transformation Talk" on how all of us working on cities & places can keep up with the trends shaping them. I'll share the stage with the incisive Laia Gasch of World Cities Culture Forum and share the room with 30 super-sharp urbanists from Jenna's brilliant little black book. Since nerves makes me irreverent, I decided to share current-day postcards from five of the cities I worked in as a TV and event producer 10-20 years back: Beijing, Rio, Bangkok, LA and my hometown of Montreal. (Moscow was in there but is sanctioned of course...). It's an invite-only gig but I bet the Q&A will be worth an emoji-studded post or two! 🤓

LOCAL CHARITIES WELCOME! Mayor #AndyBurnham asked who was in the audience at our 11 Jan #GMLeadersPlus event and only 1 hand went up for third sector (the rest were a mix of public and private). He called on us to do more, and we’re grateful for the nudge. Since we launched in 2020, we’ve had fantastic third-sector alumni - Ruth Welford & Jo Moon from Barnardo's and Lisa H., Susie Cuthill & Liam Swanston from The Proud Trust. But we have to reach farther. One clear route is our #DiverseVoices network, focused on building skills and profile for under-represented groups and led by Judi Greenwood. Get in touch if you work with communities and/or on diversity, equity or inclusion. The other is through our cross-sector #leadership programmes. They’ve always been open to charities but FoGM’s board & steering group also agreed in 2023 to offer a 100% bursary to make it easier. We’re actually offering 3 bursaries in 2024: - Two for our 6-mo Future Leaders course, starting February 8. - One for our 9-mo Leaders Plus course, starting March 7. We’ve put this out to our network, but two deadlines have passed with no applications yet. We know first-hand the capacity to act on a non-urgent opportunity - or attend an all-morning event - is a luxury for VCOs. Future of GM is itself a non-profit start-up and it’s an act of will and good conscience not to release those places and cover costs. That’s where a nudge - from anyone - can help people & organisations stay the course. We’re extending the deadline again and opening this up to LinkedIn: **If your organisation supports local people or places in Greater Manchester and has mid- to senior-level staff who could benefit from cross-sector connection & leadership development, please message Lisa Taylor by **Wed 17 Jan** so we can get applications in by 22 Jan. Happy to chat! Groundwork Greater Manchester GMCVO 10GM Healthwatch Manchester Greater Manchester Youth Network (GMYN) Manchester Disability Collaborative - spread the word!

Huge congrats to #GMLeadersPlus for four human-focused Proposals for GM on the theme of "Reclaiming the Street" (despite an evacuation, aka outdoor networking) - and for graduating! It's been a stellar year and we'll post more next week, but for now, rest up and see you at Kala for lunch. You've earned it! Thanks to Mayor of GM #AndyBurnham and Greater Manchester Combined Authority CEO eamonn boylan for sharing their thoughts on what future leaders need and how FoGM can do more of it, and to GMCA, Hatch, Trowers & Hamlins and Arup for helping us get here!
