About us

CLS is a global company and pioneer provider of monitoring and surveillance solutions for the Earth, created in 1986. We are subsidiary of the French Space Agency (CNES) and CNP, an investment firm. Our mission is to create innovative space-based solutions to understand and protect our planet and to manage its resources sustainably. CLS employs 900 people at our headquarters in Toulouse (France) and in 30 other sites around the world. The company works in five strategic markets: sustainable fisheries management, environmental monitoring, maritime surveillance, mobility, and energy & infrastructures monitoring. CLS processes data from 100,000 transponders per month (such as drifting buoys, animal tags, VMS transponders, & LRIT tracking) and observes the oceans and inland waters (more than 20 instruments onboard satellites daily deliver information to CLS on the world's seas and oceans). In addition, we monitor land and sea activities by satellite (nearly 10,000 radar processed each year). Committed to a sustainable planet, the company works every day for the Earth, from Space.

Discover how CLS digital logbook helps drivers and fleet managers on humanitarian missions. 🚙 Traditionally, drivers filled out their logbooks by hand, recording details like mileage, trip purpose, vehicle type, fuel consumption, and maintenance needs. This paper-based system, however, comes with problems such as errors, incomplete information, and the risk of losing or damaging the logbooks. CLS is solving these issues with its Digital Logbook feature, transforming vehicle tracking for humanitarian missions. By using Vehicle Tracking System (VTS) data, CLS automates and digitizes vehicle journey logging. With VTS installed in humanitarian vehicles, vital information is collected automatically. 🔧 The system starts recording data as soon as the vehicle's ignition is turned on. The VTS terminal sends various critical data points, including start & stop locations and mileage of the trip. Data is continuously updated and transmitted even when the vehicle stops, ensuring a complete and accurate log of each journey. All trip information is collected in real-time and aggregated in a database, displayed on a fleet management platform. 📈 This digitalization provides significant benefits for fleet managers.   • 🚨 🐢 Bycatch is a major threat to sea turtles, with hundreds of thousands accidentally caught each year but a recent study led by Damien Chevallier from CNRS offers a promising solution! 💡 Researchers recorded 10 sounds made by green turtles, linked to alerts, escape, or social contact. When these sounds were played in feeding areas, turtles became more alert and vigilant. This suggests a new way to keep them away from fishing gear and other dangers. 🛰 Argos services played a crucial role in this study. The sounds were recorded using cameras and hydrophones on the turtles, which were tracked and recovered using Argos services and CLS' Goniometer. This is another fantastic example of how Argos services support research and help protect sea turtles!   • Revolutionizing the installation of offshore wind farms with SARWind and DeepCLiDAR. 🌬️ Assessing offshore wind resources presents significant challenges, mainly due to the scarcity of wind data at turbine level. Our SARWind service uses an 18-year database of Synthetic Aperture Radar satellites (SAR), providing high resolution and accurate measurements of winds. This effectively complements in situ observations and mesoscale modeling for a comprehensive assessment of offshore wind resources. 🌊 The CLS DeepCLiDAR buoy, based on NOAA's proven design, which has obtained Stage 2 Carbon Trust certification, enables advanced measurements of wind profiles up to 300 meters above sea level. Equipped with solar panels and wind turbines, it offers an autonomous and reliable solution for the long-term collection of meteorological and oceanic data.   • 🌊 THEMIS contre la pêche INN : formation de représentants des états membres de la commission de l’océan Indien chez CLS Nous avons eu le plaisir d'accueillir à Toulouse des représentants des États membres de la Commission de l'océan Indien (COI) pour une formation sur notre plateforme de surveillance et monitoring de la pêche THEMIS. 💡 Cette initiative, rendue possible grâce au programme européen ECOFISH programme, vise à renforcer la lutte contre la pêche INN (illégale, non déclarée et non réglementée) grâce à l'intégration des données #VMS (Vessel Monitoring System) et #AIS (Automatic Identification System) pour un suivi optimal des bateaux de pêche dans leurs eaux. 🐟 En effet, les ressources aquatiques de la région AE-AA-IO représentent une richesse naturelle estimée à environ 50 milliards d’euros. Le programme ECOFISH s’efforce donc d’assurer la gestion durable de ces atouts en mettant en place des politiques efficaces et en promouvant de bonnes pratiques de pêche.   • 💡 Did you know, pastoralism still supports the livelihoods of around 200 million people globally? Pastoral communities are highly vulnerable to global warming. They operate in extreme environments and on lands prone to erosion, increasing the risk of natural disasters like landslides, flooding, and mudflows. Overgrazing further exacerbates erosion in pastures. According to the United Nations’s FAO, soil erosion on farmed or heavily grazed lands is 100 to 1,000 times faster than natural erosion. 👉 So, how can we limit overgrazing and manage pastures sustainably in remote areas? CLS has developed a proven solution using space-based technologies to: 🐐 Identify livestock grazing routes, estimate grazing pressures on specific areas, and identify preferred habitats via lightweight collars and ear-tags using Argos Services, providing near real-time tracking and behavior analysis through AI. 🌿 Monitor pasture conditions, predict future vegetation cover, and evaluate the effects of farming practices on pastures using a combination of Earth Observation, field data, and prediction models. Fully adaptable, this solution can be used worldwide to support sustainable pasture management.   • 🌊 The crucial role of Marine Ecosystem Modelling 💻 At CLS, our team of expert marine and fisheries scientists is dedicated to the field of marine ecosystem modelling, a vital tool for understanding and forecasting the future states of our oceans. For nearly 20 years, our commitment to this domain has driven advancements in sustainable fishing practices and marine conservation, especially through the development of the #SEAPODYM model. 🐟 SEAPODYM (Spatial Ecosystem And Population Dynamics Model) plays a central role in our research, computing the spatial evolution of biomass densities. It integrates a system of advection-diffusion-reaction equations influenced by ocean currents, temperature, and net primary productivity—essential factors that govern the transport, development, and biomass sources of marine organisms. 💡 We are thrilled to share that our fisheries scientists, Olivier Titaud and Héloïse MAGLIANO, recently participated in the Advances in Marine Ecosystem Modelling Research (AMEMR) conference in Plymouth, UK, from July 8-11. This prestigious event gathers leading minds to promote interdisciplinary discussions among stakeholders, modellers, and scientists dedicated to advancing marine ecosystem models. At AMEMR, our team presented two significant research projects that highlight our continuous efforts to enhance marine ecosystem understanding: 📌 Dynamics of #Zooplankton and #Micronecton Populations: This study uses a spatial ecosystem model based on the innovative Yin-Yang grid, offering new insights into the population dynamics of key marine species. 📌 1D Coupling of SEAPODYM-LMTL and PISCES: This project explores the application of these coupled models in homogeneous biophysical provinces, advancing our ability to simulate and understand complex marine ecosystems. We are excited by the progress shared at AMEMR and remain committed to pioneering research that supports sustainable marine ecosystems.
