We're calling for proposals for work to consider how ClimateXChange can gather and report evidence that our research activities and outputs are delivering impact, informing policy development and decision making. The work should make recommendations for how to plan for and increase this impact. This may include different types of impact across e.g. public debate, policy development and implementation, and a variety of impact pathways including e.g. researcher’s ways of working, development of networks, and impact on career paths, research capacity and research behaviours. For further information, please visit our Research calls page and submit your proposal by 26 November. https://lnkd.in/drjFSNca #impact

Dr Sarah Buckingham discusses her work on the important topic of healthy soils in policymaking in our latest podcast episode. She explains the importance of healthy soils in relation to climate change, discusses how her career in research developed and talks about what it’s like for her as a researcher working directly within Scottish Government policy teams. Listen on our website: https://lnkd.in/evgmjG38 Dr Sarah Buckingham is a Senior Consultant with SAC Consulting, part of Scotland’s Rural College, the SRUC . She recently started working on the ClimateXChange healthy soils research project in collaboration with the The James Hutton Institute. The project aims to develop a route map for soil health in Scotland, working directly with Scottish Government policy teams. Our podcast is available on Spotify and Apple Podcasts. Subscribe on your preferred platform to be alerted to new episodes as they are published.

As an organisation committed to tackling the climate emergency, we were shocked to discover that our new website emitted more carbon than 74% of websites globally. Hoping that this blog may help others facing a similar challenge, here are the steps we took to reduce emissions from our website, improving its carbon rating from F to A : https://lnkd.in/dfWZTQTX #WebsiteCarbonCalculator #GHG #website

Land use transformation, and related reductions in greenhouse gas emissions, will be necessary to achieve Scotland’s ambitions to reach net zero emissions by 2045, as well as biodiversity and climate change targets. This study aims to understand how and why land managers engage, or don't engage, with land use transformation support systems, to inform how policy could be best deployed to accelerate the process of change. Findings include: - Overall, the public sector grant-giving support network is logical and straightforward to use. - The administrative burden associated with applying to schemes is a barrier to engagement. - Land managers often decide whether to engage with support and advice based on confidence in its source. We were delighted to co-host this event with the UK Energy Research Centre (UKERC), bringing together nearly 100 experts from academia, consultancies, energy companies and policymakers from the Scottish Government across different energy topics. The event addressed key parts of the Scottish Government’s forthcoming Energy Strategy and Just Transition Plan, including local, regional and community energy; building efficiency and retrofit; low-carbon heating; energy markets and networks; and a just energy transition. The slides are now on our website and recording will be available soon.

Collaborative landscape management is the enhancement of ecosystems via combined efforts of multiple farmers and land managers across a landscape. It has potential to help meet Scottish Government targets associated with addressing biodiversity loss and climate change. This research investigated a variety of models and experiences of collaboration to explore how support for collaborative landscape management in Scotland could be provided. Did you miss out on hearing the great "Not the End of the World?" climate change debate that was a highlight of the 25th anniversary Festival of Politics? Well fear not: the whole event has now been made available on The Scottish Parliament’s YouTube channel. You will hear our own Prof Baukje de Roos talking about how what we all eat affects the speed we can get to net zero – and some of the The Scottish Government-funded research the Rowett is doing to underpin nutrition policies that help the planet as well as public health. And there’s great insight too from Anne Marte Bergseng of ClimateXChange, Dr Mike Robinson OBE from the Royal Scottish Geographical Society and Brunswick Group's Robert P. Moran - all under the watchful eye of the vice-convenor of the net zero energy and transport committee, Ben Macpherson MSP. Scotland is already experiencing climate change impacts, including increasing water scarcity, flooding and extreme weather events. The Scottish Government is preparing for these challenges with the third Scottish National Adaptation Plan (SNAP3), which was published earlier this week. Our new report presents indicators for monitoring the four domestic outcomes of SNAP3. It establishes a baseline prior to the implementation of the Plan for monitoring and determining progress at the end of its five-year period.
