☀️🛳️ This week, Maria Deligianni, CLIA Regional Director, Eastern Mediterranean, and Nikos Mertzanidis, CLIA Vice-President, Ports & Destinations were in Santorini to meet the Mayor of Santorini, Nikolaos Zorzos, and local authorities to discuss the future of cruise tourism on the island. 🗣️Maria Deligianni stated: “Santorini is a beautiful location that is extremely popular, and we share the view expressed recently by Prime Minister Mitsotakis on the importance of responsible tourism management for the island. Mayor Zorzos has been clear with us from the beginning of this season about his intention to implement strictly the existing daily cap of 8.000 cruise visitors at 75% cruise capacity, and we are supportive of this position, recognizing the circumstances of Santorini. Whilst we believe that a holistic approach to address tourism flows is necessary, we are pleased to be the first to work with the Mayor of Santorini in this direction”. “We are pleased that the Municipality of Thira discussed and agreed with CLIA the solutions for the sustainable operation of cruising in Santorini, aiming to protect the uniqueness of the destination, as well as the passenger experience.” 💬 | Nikolaos Zorzos, Mayor of Santorini. #CLIA recognises that cruise tourism management in Santorini is a top priority in Greece, as outlined in CLIA’s Action Plan for Greece launched last year. 🤝 Dialogue with ports and destinations is at the heart of #ResponsibleTourism. ➡ Follow the link to read the full press release: https://lnkd.in/erTgTGUe

#CLIA engagement in Iceland 💭 Reflecting on a week of intense discussions on the sustainable growth of cruise tourism in Iceland, in collaboration with Cruise Iceland: 🛳️ Cruise Iceland and PONANT hosted the media and business community leaders on board Le Commandant Charcot. Reykjavik Economics presented the first-ever study on the economic impact of cruise in Iceland, commissioned by Faxaports. The main findings are: ⚓The total number of passengers arriving in Iceland on cruise ships was 315,000 ⚓Last year, which is about 12-14% of all passengers arriving in Iceland. ⚓The economic impact of the industry is estimated at 37.2 billion ISK in 2023. ⚓Total consumption of cruise ship passengers 22-30 billion ISK. ⚓Revenue for all ports in Iceland was at 3.4 billion ISK in 2023. Finally, CLIA hosted a policy breakfast meeting with Ministry officials, the French Ambassador Mr. BAZARD Guillaume and the US Consul Ms. Karla Thomas to discuss the industry efforts to support the EU Green Deal and the pathway to net-zero GHG emissions in 2050. 💡CLIA ocean-going cruise lines are charting the course to net zero emissions by 2050, by reducing the carbon footprint of ships while at berth and at sea, the GHG emissions reduction and obligation to provide and use OPS in ports envisaged in these new regulations will help achieve these goals. During the meeting, Ms. Lilja Dögg Alfreðsdóttir, Minister of Culture and Business Affairs, presented the main points in the new proposal for a Tourism Action Plan 2030 in Iceland. The industry has a track record of collaboration with cruise destinations, so the value cruise adds to communities is economic, environmental, and social. 🙌 A special thanks to all participants for a lively discussion on the sustainable future of cruise.
