⚡Recharge, refocus, rebuild: Cleantech for UK’s Manifesto for the general election⚡ Our nation stands at the threshold of a transformative moment. Over the course of the next political mandate, we can generate thousands of new jobs for citizens in all regions of the UK and usher in a fresh era of prosperity and net zero industry. Currently, all major economies are competing vying for the lead in a global #cleantech race, and the UK must take decisive action to maintain its #competitiveness. Today, at the The Royal Institution, Cleantech for UK unveiled its manifesto, outlining the following three priorities to secure our cleantech industrial leadership: ⚡ Recharge the cleantech economy by closing the scaleup funding gap 🎯 Refocus on enabling policy 💡 Rebuild British leadership in key cleantech sectors At the launch event our Director, Sarah Mackintosh moderated an expert panel consisting of Jon Fuller (Breakthrough Energy ), Ed Phillips (Future Planet Capital), and Joe McMullen (AirEx Technologies) discussing their lived experiences in the cleantech field. The panellists shared their perspectives on their sector’s needs and the hurdles they observe for massively scaling and deploying cleantech solutions in the UK. For more information, you can access the Manifesto linked here or via the image posted below: https://lnkd.in/gUbm8WTj We'd like to thank Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation for hosting us at the Royal Institution. 💡The Role of the UK in the Cleantech Space💡 The UK’s dynamic economic landscape boasts a range of extraordinary features, from a global financial hub to world-class science and research institutes. We are an innovation powerhouse. However, we struggle to scale these cleantech solutions domestically. Our Director Sarah Mackintosh recently sat down with Natalia Vasnier at The Conference Corner, sharing her views on the future of UK cleantech, and what the new government should prioritise to supercharge the British cleantech sector. Thanks Natalia for taking the time to hear us out! https://lnkd.in/eRMUijJi

🌍 London Climate Action Week – A Week for the Memoirs 🌍 What an incredible week! 🍹 It all began with drinks at Dynamo Energy Hub with Meade Harris where I had the pleasure of discussing all things skills with the inspirational Greg Jackson. 🎤 Next up was Reset Connect, where I participated in two panels: one on the UK’s advantages and disadvantages with Charles Lesser, Avent Bezuidenhoudt and Rowan Bird, and the second on the power of partnerships with Ruth Herbert MPhys, FEI Unzall Haq, Øistein Jensen and Mark Muldowney. 🚀 I then dashed to the #BESummit24, where I met some of my colleagues in person for the first time, heard from amazing speakers like Tony Blair, Prince William, and Bill Gates, drank water from the troposphere (yes, really – see SOURCEGLOBAL LIMITED), and connected with amazing companies and innovators like Mission Zero Technologies, ZeroAvia, and 44.01. Their work filled me with optimism for the future. 💡 So many important takeaways, but Bill Gates summed it up perfectly: “If we use the right policies and get the [innovation] volume up, it really is possible to get those emissions down.” This is the raison d'être for Cleantech for UK 🤝 A key theme throughout the week was the importance of partnerships. We are going to partner like never before to deliver the transition we need. 🎉 My week concluded with a personal celebration of my father-in-law’s illustrious mass spectrometry career at the Royal Society of Chemistry. The key to his success? Partnership and collaboration. 😉 😁 With thanks to my inspiring colleagues who made the week so fulfilling, Julia Reinaud Jules Besnainou Bianca Dragomir Kädi Ristkok Magnus Agerström Federico Cuppoloni Tom Rollason Jon Fuller Richard Youngman Todd Allmendinger Tobias Lechtenfeld and more.

🎙 Cleantech on the Policy Dispatch podcast 🎙 Our Director, @Sarah Mackintosh recently sat down with Sam Morgan at FORESIGHT Climate & Energy, joining him for his podcast, Policy Dispatch. They discussed the strength of the British cleantech sector in the face of inflation and geopolitical pressures, and what must be done politically to support and supercharge the sector. Our messages: 💷 The cleantech market remains buoyant, defying the downturn in the general VC market 💡 The UK has competitive advantages in a number of sectors, such as offshore wind where we are second only to China due to beneficial geography and well-developed policy support ⚠ UK cleantech innovators face huge funding gaps for first-of-a-kind ( and nth-of-a-kind commercialisation projects 📋 To scale cleantech in the UK, we must implement an adequate funding ladder consisting of innovative blended finance options, predictable long-term policy that sends clear market signals, and upskilling efforts to strengthen the workforce Scaling up cleantech innovation is an opportunity to generate wealth and prosperity across the entire United Kingdom. To realise this huge potential, the next government will have to move forward with bold, clear policy measures addressing the shortcomings in the current support system. Listen to the full episode via the linked post! And many thanks to Sam for this great conversation. https://lnkd.in/eStKraxk
The United Kingdom’s clean tech sector has proven itself to be rather resilient in recent years. But Britain cannot rest on its laurels and more improvements have to be made. Sarah Mackintosh joins the show to explain what should come next. Clean technologies are the indispensable hardware of the energy transition. Whether its wind turbines, grid components or futuristic fusion power, without clean tech, we won’t get anywhere. The United Kingdom has proven itself to be an attractive place to develop and scale up clean technologies but the sector has begun to lose momentum and stagnate. A general election on July 4th could well mark a change in policies. Sarah Mackintosh, director of the Cleantech for UK initiative, joins the Policy Dispatch to explain what the UK is doing right and where it could stand to improve. Just download the app to listen. 💡A Guide to the 2024 General Election Party Manifestos💡 The main UK political parties have released their manifestos, outlining their respective strategies for climate change, economic transformation, and job creation. The proposals rangefrom market-driven to state-led approaches. Within the scope of the ClimateTech Policy Coalition, Cleantech for UK has joined forces with Startup Coalition, Tech Nation, Tech Zero, techUK and Undaunted: Tackling climate change with innovation - together, we have analysed and evaluated how the party manifestos’ policies' would affect economic growth, job creation, and impact on climate action if enacted. We publish this guide ahead of the election, evaluating the party manifestos specifically from the perspective of climate innovation, and the founders, investors and policymakers who play key roles in this sector, Check out our analysis of the party programmes to learn more about what’s at stake for the UK’s cleantech competitiveness in this election, and how different political visions and proposals interplay with the needs of the innovators and investors who lead our charge towards net zero.

The cleantech community comes from a broad range of backgrounds. We sat down with Ed Phillips, Head of Global Ventures at Future Planet Capital, which recently joined the Cleantech for UK coalition. A biologist by training, Ed studied how climate induced changes in our oceans affect the very building blocks of life within native kelp populations—a critical foundation of marine ecosystems. Over the course of his career, however, Ed transitioned into VC and now full circle into cleantech and the oftentimes overlooked Blue Economy. Thank you for sharing your thoughts on the state of UK cleantech, and how to best support our homegrown cleantech champions! https://lnkd.in/efgMQQ4U
