  • Many congratulations to Gregory Jones KC and David Chalk, who have taken office today as the new Sheriffs of London, and will hold the position for one year. The Sheriffs’ modern-day duties include supporting the Lord Mayor in his or her civic duties and serving - both, at home and abroad - as ambassadors for the UK-based financial and professional services industry by promoting the UK as a place in which to do business. Based at the Old Bailey, the office is an integral part of the City’s support for the rule of law. The office of Sheriff of the City of London, a pre-requisite for becoming Lord Mayor, is one of the oldest in existence and dates back to the Middle Ages.

  • Provocatively titled ‘I’m Not Okay’ and promising an “unfiltered look at when youth culture was cute, raw, vulnerable, and unapologetically different”, the new #exhibition at Barbican Centre Music Library examines how the early #Emo scene resonated so deeply with a generation of teenagers. ‘I’m Not Okay (An Emo Retrospective)’ is a collaboration between the Museum Of Youth Culture (MOYC) and the City of London Corporation-owned library. The exhibition is FREE to view and runs until 15 January 2025. Featuring personal photos taken on early digital and mid-00s phone cameras, the content has been retrieved from old hard drives and Photobucket accounts and focuses on the first-generation Emo scene (2004-2009) when bands such as My Chemical Romance, Fall Out Boy, and Finch were hugely influential. The result, says MOYC, is a visually engaging exhibition that delves into how Emo subculture became a positive force for acceptance, addressing issues of sexuality, mental health, gender, identity, and belonging. #DestinationCity

Town Clerk & Chief Executive at City of London Corporation. London's lead local authority CEO for economy, employment and skills.

Let’s talk about exceptional colleagues and celebrating their achievements 🚀 The City of London Corporation's excellent Director of IT, and valued colleague, Zakki Ghauri, has been quite rightfully recognised in the prestigious CIO100 Awards – that’s Chief Information Officer for us IT non-pros. 💪🏿 Zakki ranked 19th among the top technology leaders across the UK, all of whom were recognised and celebrated for their influential talent in technology leadership, strategy, innovation and driving digital transformation. Quite an achievement for a first-time nominee! 🎉 What makes this award even more special is that it’s judged by fellow CIOs, underscoring the significant impact Zakki – and his team - has had not just in our organisation, but across the industry who are using IT in new and innovative ways to deliver the best business value.✨ Zakki, of course, sings the praises of his wonderful team: “This is by no means an individual award and highlights the excellent work our team has delivered across the City Corporation over the past year. None for this could have happened without the support I’ve received from our Senior Leadership Team, Members of our Digital Services Committee, as well as my colleagues right across the organisation - including our institutions. We have some absolute superstars in Digital, Information and Technology Services at the City Corporation and this award truly belongs to them.” ⭐ Well done Zakki and our Digital, Information and Technology Services colleagues. This award truly is a testament to your outstanding work and you are just one of many reasons I am incredibly proud to be part of the City Corporation family. 🙌🏿 #CIO100Awards #Technology #Leadership #TechnologyLeadership #Strategy #Innovation #DigitalTransformation

Yesterday the Transition Finance Market Review held its flagship event at Climate Week NYC. Keynote speeches were provided by: ▪ the Rt Hon Ed Miliband, Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero ▪ Vanessa-Harvard Williams, Chair of the Transition Finance Market Review; and ▪ Chris Faint, Chief Sustainability Officer and Head of Climate Risks, Bank of England. We also heard from two panels, discussing international and industry perspectives on transition finance. Rt Hon Ed Miliband said that “the UK is absolutely committed to the transition domestically, and to demonstrating global leadership”. He emphasised collaboration with industry as the only way to surmount the challenges of the net zero transition and seize the opportunity, noting the “incredible role of business in driving forward this agenda – as innovators, financiers, and advocates”. Key takeaways from the session include:  🌍 Recognise the opportunity: Transition finance offers a framework for sustainable growth. Acting now will allow governments and market actors to seize the opportunities of the transition.  🌍 International collaboration: International markets must work together to develop a robust transition finance market. We must ensure that the approach works for all markets and recognises the importance of a just transition.  🌍 Communicate: All actors in the transition must support education and understanding of the importance of the transition, the critical elements of a robust transition finance market, and the key actions to be taken forward. The Transition Finance Market Review will publish its final report in mid-October. The City of London Corporation hosts and co-heads the secretariat of the Transition Finance Market Review. Thank you to A&O Shearman, legal advisors to the Transition Finance Market Review for hosting this event. Thank you to all our panellists: Helena Viñes Fiestas, Charlotte Gardes-Landolfini, Jo Tyndall, David Harris, Abrielle Rosenthal, Rachel McEwen, Steffen Kram, and Cynthia Urda Kassis for opening and closing the event. • Released last week, our new research - 'Catalysing UK economic growth through financial services foreign direct investment: a call to action' - shows that the UK could benefit from £7.7bn in additional capital from foreign sovereign investors by 2030. The analysis shows that after a foreign sovereign investor (sovereign wealth fund or public pension fund) sets up an office in the UK, they go on to double their UK investments. This has led to an additional £13.4bn investment across the UK in key growth areas such as infrastructure, innovative tech sectors, and renewable energy in the last decade. There have been 92 investments by these firms spread across 36 different cities and towns outside London. That is why the UK needs to establish a long-term financial and professional services (FPS) strategy overseen by a public-private sector FPS Council to target these investors. Building on the Harrington Review of FDI, the strategy will convene the best of Government and industry to forge a path that places financial and professional services at the heart of the UK’s inward investment, streamlining our approach and setting the foundations for a cross-sector National Investment agency.
