Developing vessel concepts with the power of hand sketching.
I’m really excited to share some of my learning experiences from the past two weeks as an undergraduate intern at Chartwell Marine Ltd, a vessel design company. I’ve loved working in a creative environment and discussing within the team of engineers the balance between form and function.
I worked on four different designs using Adobe Illustrator and Sketchbook Pro, including a catamaran ferry and an 8-metre rig boat. Responsible for my own direction, I independently led the research, sketching, ideation and hand-rendering on the development of these projects. It has been wonderful to expand my sketching and design skills, as well as learning how to collaborate on real projects with experienced colleagues. Some of my designs were then used to form CAD models for live briefs.
I’d like to say a huge thanks to the team for making me so welcome, in particular Andy Page, Aaron Rogers, Robin Saunders, Cam Stewart, Christophe Rident, Thomas Payne, Megan Smith and the rest of the team. I’ve developed a much greater understanding of the whole vessel design process. I will also sorely miss the beautiful view from the office.
