It’s been a busy time for our Low Carbon Communities team with the Energy Saving for All project is well underway again!   Recently our colleague Kathleen delivered a fantastic volunteer training session at the CEMVO office in Glasgow. We were joined by Giscard, Olive, Favour and Chaoran, just a few of our dedicated volunteers involved in this project.  Our volunteers go above and beyond supporting Changeworks whilst working full-time, studying for degrees and providing childcare. It’s amazing to see their dedication and belief for this project to support minoritised ethnic communities.  Our colleague Tom and volunteer Anand have also been getting out and about in Glasgow, attending the Central and West Integration Network (CWIN) community lunch and delivering an energy advice presentation at the Glasgow Afghan United office. Both events were very well attended with lots of vital conversations taking place to engage households and start them on their decarbonisation journey.  If you volunteer or support any communities which you feel would benefit from our support, then please let us know.

Our Home Energy Scotland Highlands and Islands team have been hard at work on Raasay as part of the Carbon Neutral Islands project. The project was set up by the Scottish Government with the aim to support six islands to reach net zero by 2040.  However, due to the island’s location, lack of contractors willing to travel there and a high percentage of homes on the island suffering from damp, there are significant challenges in the way to help retrofit Raasay. Social housing landlords are taking steps to improve the energy efficiency of the homes they rent out and to meet standards set by the Scottish Government. Check out these case studies developed as part of our latest project run by Changeworks to support social landlords in their delivery of green heating. Some lessons for social landlords from the study: - Tenant engagement: Consider a mixed-method approach to engage and support a range of residents, such as face-to-face events, ongoing support and opportunities to see and use the technology in-situ. - Impact evaluation: This should be planned from the outset of the project to truly understand the impact of the project on tenants, its success in achieving its aims and how it might be improved for next time. The methodology should provide a before and after picture, and include temperature and humidity assessments, energy consumption data and EPC data. - Multiple buildings: In projects involving large or multiple buildings, delivering at least one building as a pilot helps identify and address any challenges. Rolling the installations out in one building helps to reduce disruption and focus tenant support. - Project management and costs: If you plan to procure a project manager, involving them from the outset means that they can support with application writing. It should be noted that there may be a cost to this, which should be taken into account. We have been working closely with the Midlothian Council  to investigate the possibility of retrofitting their British Iron and Steel Federation (BISF) properties utilising area-based scheme funding from the Scottish Government. BISF properties are a non-traditional housing type. Both their unconventional construction method and their age means there could be potential problems with retrofit if not well considered. The design team led by our experts developed options to explore the more environmentally friendly and cost-effective whole house retrofit measures. Structural surveys were then carried out which revealed the properties to be in good condition for their age. Next, our team used energy modelling to quantify the impact on building energy efficiency and tenant fuel bills, whilst ensuring tenant and building health through ventilation. Currently the retrofit works are being planned, putting the council buildings on the pathway towards net zero and upcoming standards. It is also great that the results and methodology from this project can be used to accelerate the retrofit of other BISF or steel framed properties. Ofgem recently published a discussion paper that reflected on the existing ‘price-cap’ model for energy price protection for consumers and lessons from the energy crisis.  As part of this they asked for input from consumer groups, charities, energy suppliers and investors about how the price cap could be changed and whether there are alternatives that could better protect consumers.
