Cavendish Nuclear and Progressive Alliance recently took part in ‘Bright Stars’ an award-winning competition aimed at primary school children across Cumbria. Each school receives £50 in seed funding with a simple instruction to set up their own mini social enterprise over the course of 8 weeks and, through creativity, grow that investment, making a difference to their world and the lives of people around them. Centre for Leadership Performance (CforLP) links a local business to its local school to offer guidance and encouragement throughout the trading period. The programmes aim is to raise aspirations, ignite interest in the world of work, and nurture creativity in primary pupils. During this collaboration, Jude Davison and Spencer Huddart Brown shared their knowledge and expertise with a group of students from Dearham Primary School. The ‘Dearham Dreams Team’ pupils decided to make and sell bracelets and are proud of their business model and excited to continue learning about the world of work! Penny (Year 5) “I had the idea that we could make and sell bracelets as they are popular at the minute. When we voted on ideas, my idea got the most votes, so that is the one we are going to start with! We all did designs for prototype bracelets we could use to show our customers. We had ideas that we could make ones inspired by popular things, like tv shows and movies and Taylor Swift (I’m a Swiftie!) because they would probably sell the best. Jayden (Year 5) “I wanted to design some bracelets that boys would like. I produced a bunch of football themed bracelets, inspired by different players and teams. My plan is to make a few of my designs, so that we have prototypes to show to people." Jude Davison, Engineering Mechanical Higher-Level Apprentice, Cavendish Nuclear “It was great to be able to support the development and all the unique and clever ideas that the pupils came up with at our local primary school and introduce them to the world of work”. #STEM #cavendishnuclear #inspiration

At Cavendish Nuclear our corporate volunteering ‘Be Kind’ days allows us to give something back to the communities that need our support. Recently an enthusiastic team of volunteers from Cavendish Nuclear joined The Buddy Bag Foundation QAVS. The Foundation does fantastic work supporting children and young people who need emergency care by ensuring they have the supplies they need to make their stay more comfortable and have something they can call their own. This was made extra special being able to include in the buddy bags books produced by our very own The3Engineers, a team of ex Babcock employees who have written a series of fun rhyming children’s books which raise awareness of environmental issues. The books about the Adventures of the curious Scout aim to inspire children to play a positive role in protecting our natural world. Our scientific apprentices take great pride in sharing their knowledge and expertise with the next generation of scientists. We believe that hands-on experience is invaluable in the scientific field, and we are committed to providing students with a supportive and enriching learning environment. Our scientific apprentices Megan and Luke said, “This program offers students the opportunity to gain practical experience in a real-world scientific setting, working alongside experienced professionals in the field of nuclear science.” This was echoed by a Year 12 pupil at Keswick school who said, “I couldn’t have asked for a better placement”. We are always excited to welcome students to Cavendish Nuclear and look forward to seeing them thrive in this dynamic and challenging industry.
