🇬🇧 The UK will need to almost double the climate finance it gives for nature conservation annually in order to meet one of its flagship international targets. 💷 The previous Conservative government promised that £3bn would be used to protect nature between 2021 and 2026. 🔎 A series of FOI requests and additional analysis by Carbon Brief reveal that the UK spent an average of around £450m each year on nature for the first three years of the commitment. 📈 This will need to rise to more than £800m a year for the next two years to hit the target, amounting to nearly £1.7bn by 2026. What are the effects of solar geoengineering on reaching net-zero? The idea of solar geoengineering is to reduce global temperatures by reflecting more of the sun’s incoming radiation away from the Earth’s surface. One of the most talked-about approaches is stratospheric aerosol injection (SAI), which involves the injection of aerosols in an upper layer of the atmosphere. However, a pair of studies found that SAI could in fact slow decarbonisation efforts by reducing the energy output of wind and solar systems. The UK has become the first major economy – and first G7 member – to shut down all its coal-fired power plants. The last plant, Ratcliffe-on-Soar in Nottinghamshire, closed on September 30, ending a 142-year era of burning coal to generate electricity. From 1882 until Ratcliffe’s closure, the UK’s coal plants will have burned through 4.6bn tonnes of coal and emitted 10.4bn tonnes of CO2 – more than most countries have ever produced from all sources. In a detailed and interactive explainer, Carbon Brief explains: ➡️ How the UK stopped using coal power ➡️ Where the UK get its electricity from today ➡️ What comes next for the UK’s electricity mix ➡️ What can other countries learn from the UK phaseout ✍️ Molly Lempriere and Dr Simon Evans 🎨 Joe G. 🔍 Dr Verner Viisainen Read the full explainer here ⬇️ https://lnkd.in/ePMxqZAf #UKpolicy #CoalPower #FossilFuels #Emissions

🇬🇧 The UK will miss the UN’s deadline to publish a new national plan for how it will address nature loss ahead of the COP16 biodiversity summit in Colombia this month. In December 2023 at the COP28 climate summit in 🇦🇪 Dubai, the UK pledged to publish its nature strategy by May of this year. 🗣️ The missed deadline comes after UK foreign secretary David Lammy said that the government would prioritise action against biodiversity loss, describing it as a “more fundamental threat” than terrorism to the nation. 📖 Although it will not now publish a new national plan before COP16, the UK did provide the UN with a technical document, known as a national target submission, in place of its strategy. 🇨🇳China’s national emissions trading scheme (ETS), already the world’s biggest carbon market, is now set to be expanded from covering only the power sector to also cover steel, aluminium and cement. 📈 The new plan will raise the share of national CO2 emissions covered by the market from 40% of China’s total to 60%, according to China's Ministry of Ecology and Environment. However, in contrast to other carbon markets, China’s ETS is based on carbon intensity – the emissions per unit of output – rather than total emissions. This means it has only a limited effect in incentivising less carbon-intensive production. Today is the day the UK becomes the first G7 country to completely phase out coal power Since opening "Jumbo", the world's first coal power plant in 1882, the UK's coal plants have burned through a whopping 4.6bn tonnes of coal, emitting 10.4GtCO2 – which is more than most countries have ever released Here's the story of how that all came to an end: https://lnkd.in/ev_6mE64
