We welcome the signal of change following the Government announcement that Skills England will be created to drive the much-needed change in the skills system.    The skills system is too complicated and going to college to learn a ‘skill’ has been seen as second place to going to university to gain a degree. The needs of the workforce are changing; jobs are changing; and the global economy is driving a need for people to skill, upskill and reskill. Angela Joyce, our CEO, said: “Skills England marks a commitment from this Government to make changes. We look forward to working with Richard Pennycook CBE and the Government to make the skills system easier to navigate for young people, adults, employers, and stakeholders. Ensuring we have a skilled workforce underpins economic growth and success, and it is heartening that reforms to our skills system are at the foremost of this new Government’s thinking.“   Capital City College, which is in Keir Starmer constituency, already delivers a skills-based curriculum with almost 40,000 students studying a range of courses, including training in wind turbines, digital, retrofit, ophthalmology, culinary arts, health, engineering, and many more. The College’s 9,000 16-18-year-olds combine academic and practical learning through a range of qualifications that include BTECs, City & Guilds Diplomas, T levels, and A Levels. Adult learners may attend a Mayor’s Academy, a short course, or complete an HND.
