UK’s leading social enterprise coffee roaster.

About us

We’re the UK’s leading social enterprise coffee roaster. What we do Make sure that drinking coffee today doesn’t stop us drinking coffee tomorrow. Why we do it Because if farmers can’t make a living growing coffee, they’ll stop. And right now 80% of them aren’t earning enough to do basic things like feed their families and get medical help when they’re sick. Changing the way coffee is bought and sold is the only way to guarantee the future of our daily drink – and of the people who make it. How we do it We put our growers first. We buy from them directly, pay them fairly, and invest in cooperatives so they get local support and training. Our growers also own shares in our business and sit on the Board – so they’ve got a direct say in how we run things and when we make a profit they do too. We respect the earth. If we want the earth to give us coffee, we can’t strip it of the things it needs to do that. So we’re working hard to use only renewable energy, we prioritise buying organic coffee, and we’re making sure 100% of our packaging can be reused, recycled, or composted. We lead the pack. We can’t guarantee the future of coffee all on our own. So we’re open about our goals, why they matter, and exactly what it takes to reach them – making it easy for other companies to follow our lead. We make really decent coffee. We can’t help our growers if we can’t sell our coffee. So we make sure it tastes as decent as it acts. Our long-standing relationships mean farmers give us the best of the crop, so you’ve got good reason to pick our pack off the shelf – turning an everyday ritual into a gamechanger. Our brands include Cafédirect, Grumpy Mule, and Eros. We roast and pack coffee making it simple to access our future-proofed sourcing (think private label and bespoke brands). Save the decent coffee you love. Get in touch [email protected]

In it, we share our social-purpose story and why we joined B Corp in the early days. Let us know what you think of it... B Lab UK Beer52.com | B-Corp

Nature. Fresh air. Good times. Our company away day with our charity partner, the Peak District National Park Foundation was what we needed. We swapped a day in front of our laptops for a day in the Peak District. We made ourselves useful with spades and secateurs while spotting the local wildlife. Some of us also abseiled, giving the chance to spot the rare sight of coffee workers dangling from a bridge. Without nature we’re nothing. The Foundation does much-needed conservation in the National Park. Moorland restoration. Tree planting. Wildlife habitation. We support their work with donations from every bag of Grumpy Mule Dark Peak. Over the last two years it’s raised almost £90,000. Our CEO John Steel notes, "We had a fabulous day with our charity partner, the Peak District Foundation. Being in that beautiful landscape reinforced the importance of the ecosystem that nature provides for all of us. That's why we also invest in our coffee growers in Latin America and Africa, to support farming that protects nature.”

As a nation, we love good coffee. But it needs protecting. Our latest Progress Report shows how we’re getting on with tackling the big issues in coffee. Because changing the way coffee is bought and sold is the only way to guarantee the future of our daily drink – and of the people who make it. 2023 was a huge year. We doubled in size overnight with the purchase of Bewley’s UK. One new roastery. Two new coffee brands. Hundreds of venues selling our coffee across the UK. Millions of farmers earning enough to feed their families. Take a look at some of our highlights from last year below. Read the full report here: https://lnkd.in/eGEci-kK (Spanish version available)

It’s been one year since we bought Bewley’s UK and doubled in size overnight. A small social enterprise buying a larger private company is no small feat.  Especially when we buy and sell our coffee differently. We buy direct, we pay fairly, we invest in farmers. Now we’re buying and roasting coffee for the out-of-home market (universities, business & industry, hospitality, retail and wholesalers) and growing our at-home market through private label and specialty coffee brand, Grumpy Mule. We buy and sell our coffee differently so farmers can keep doing what they’re doing. Most farmers barely earn enough to keep growing coffee – we’re going to change that. It’s the only way to guarantee the future of our daily drink – and of the people who make it. Our farmer relationships mean we get their best coffee. So by working us you get that too. But despite all our certifications and our high scoring B Corp status we’re surprisingly competitive. If you buy coffee for your company – contact us to find out more. [email protected]

"Businesses and nature are completely dependent upon each other." That's why we joined the Restore Nature Now march on Saturday 22 June. Alongside Business Declares members, we marched for a healthy environment and eco system. Because without it we won't have business in the future. Hear more from Cafédirect's Roxy Rocks-Engelman in this short reel below.

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who joined us on Saturday at the #restorenaturenow march in London. It was an incredible event with around 60-80,000 people showing their support. We were there to show business cares about nature and to call on politicians to restore nature because there is no business on a dead planet 🌍 1. Give a pay-rise for nature 2. Make polluters pay 3. Deliver more space for nature 4. Put a right to a healthy environment in law 5. Ensure fair and effective climate action Take a couple of minutes to watch our video from the day and thank you to all our contributors: Triodos Bank - Bevis Watts, Cafédirect Group - Roxy Rocks-Engelman, Riverford Organic Farmers, Ecosia - Sophie Dembinski, TealCo - Hannah Temple, Fashion Declares - Safia Minney, MBE FRSA, Bates Wells - Lawrence Simanowitz, and to Matt Golding for capturing the day in this film. Let's keep the pressure on and action going!
