How can FAIR (& responsible) data strengthen socially beneficial AI innovation for digital agriculture?📊🤖 Chipo Msengezi, Senior Project Manager, Digital Development at CABI explains why, on top of being best practice, FAIR data is crucial for the success and scalability of AI in agriculture. 👇
Without the adoption of #FAIR (and responsible) data principles, AI is hampered by fragmented, inaccessible, and non-interoperable data. This limits its ability to learn, adapt, and provide meaningful insights. Here are more reasons why FAIR data is crucial for AI: -AI models benefit immensely from reusing data across different applications and contexts. Reusable data helps refine models, transfer learning, and accelerate innovation, making AI systems more adaptive and intelligent especially in addressing local agricultural issues. -FAIR data principles promote transparency in how data is sourced and used. This is critical for building trust among farmers and stakeholders, ensuring AI systems are ethical, unbiased, and aligned with local needs and contexts. -Scalable AI solutions require a consistent and repeatable approach to data management. FAIR principles provide a framework for managing data at scale, ensuring that AI initiatives can grow and adapt over time, ultimately benefiting more farmers and communities. Embracing FAIR data is not just a best practice; it’s a necessity for the success and scalability of AI in transforming agriculture. Check out the article my colleague Ameen Jauhar wrote, titled "How can FAIR (& responsible) data bolster socially beneficial AI innovation for Digital Agriculture?" which was featured in Issue 7 of #CABI's FAIR Journal https://lnkd.in/eAZrhRhc #AI #FAIRData #Agriculture #DevelopingCountries #Innovation #AgTech #FoodSecurity #DataManagement

How can sterile insects control pests?🪰 By releasing sterilized males into the wild to mate with fertile females, the next generation's population is reduced. The sterile insect technique is considered one of the most environmentally friendly control methods that also minimizes the need for chemical insecticides. Learn more about this biocontrol method and the exciting new initiative that's encouraging its adoption among Quebec farmers 👉 https://ow.ly/EVYv50SGfL8 Thanks to our associates at Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada/ Agriculture et Agroalimentaire Canada for connecting us with this exciting initiative! #Biocontrols | #SustainableAgriculture | #PestManagement

Countries most vulnerable to climate change and hunger get the least research. 🌍📉 50% fewer studies focus on Sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia and the Middle East.
When it comes to studies on the agrifood systems in the regions of most need, the vast majority (65%) of the published research originates from researchers from rich countries around the word. In fact, only one out of every eight scientific studies are led by scientists from the 81 low and lower-income countries. It’s another worrying trend highlighted in the new State of the Field of Research for Agriculture and Food Systems report, which analyzed 6.3 million scientific titles, abstracts and metadata from 2010–2023. “When scientists from these countries are marginalized and prevented from contributing to the global conversation, we all miss out on learning relevant, contextualized lessons from the very regions that are being targeted by policy makers and policy targets,” the report authors state.
