In what felt like a Moses moment in the evolution of the new Sydney Fish Markets, we recently walked across the seafloor under the build before the coffers were ‘rewatered’. These shots capture a fish-eye view of the undercroft and foundations beneath what will become a revitalised waterfront – for the community, visitors and our marine ecology. Sirius - retain, restore and reimagine a brutalist landmark. Developer JDH Capital led the ambitious retrofit project in collaboration with BVN and Richard Crookes Constructions. By harmonising old and new, the skilful regeneration of this 1970s building marks an exciting new era. Sirius is a beacon for enduring architecture and radical adaptation projects – the world over. On a civic scale, Sirius prioritises reconnection with the site and local community by carefully stitching the building back into its urban context, surrounding streets and pedestrian pathways of The Rocks. Reintroducing landscaped public spaces allows our projects to prioritise opportunities for connection and interaction. Excitement is high as the 2024 Council of Tall Buildings and Urban Habitats international convention Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) kicks off today in London, with BVN participating as proud conference partners. This year’s conference unfolds through the theme of New or Renew – calling the architecture, design and construction industry to sustainably address the density dilemma. This week, our Senior Practice Director and Contracts Director – Kevin Murphy – pivots toward retirement. We’re taking a moment to reflect on 16 full-tilt years in which Kevin has made a profound impact on the firm. His imprint can be found across some 500 projects ranging from the New Aboriginal Art Gallery in Mparntwe Alice Springs, Atlassian HQ, New Sydney Fish Markets and Sirius in Sydney to UQ Brisbane City to Griffith University and Yarilla Place Coffs Harbour. Kevin is renowned for his integrity, generosity, quick wit and calming presence. His problem-solving ability is legendary and it is very likely that the words ‘what would Kevin do?’ will echo through our studios as BVNers summon the wisdom of this master architect and all-round gentleman. In the words of Principal David Kelly, “Kevin, your professionalism, knowledge and courage have had an enormous influence on the practice and the manner in which we do business… Your legacy is immense – thank you!” Kevin will remain on our radar in a consultancy role as he prepares to embark on his next adventures. Please join us in thanking Kevin and wishing him the very best on his next endeavours.

Great to be on-site today as we hit the halfway mark on the construction of Atlassian Central - our new Aussie headquarters in the heart of Sydney’s new Tech Central precinct. We’ve long championed the need for a dedicated technology precinct in Sydney. While a couple of scrappy Aussies can build a unicorn from their spare room, we know it’s infinitely easier when you have a strong community around you. Tech Central is the place for the Australian technology community to come together and call home. It will strengthen Sydney’s position as one of the world’s leading technology cities, and it will be the launchpad for Australia’s next big ideas. 🚀 We’re excited to work with the NSW Government and others to breathe life into the precinct, encouraging more technology companies and start ups to come here, and making it the epicentre of entrepreneurial activity in the city. Thank you to the NSW Government, Dexus, Built. and Obayashi for helping make this vision a reality.
