We welcome the publication of the 2024 edition of the Legal 500 directory – a leading guide to law firms and lawyers in the UK. The firm achieved 38 practice area and 71 individual rankings across the full range of our commercial legal specialisms. The Legal 500 has been analysing the capabilities of law firms across the world since 1987 and its rankings assess the strengths of lawyers and firms in more than 150 jurisdictions. Its research is based on feedback from 300,000 clients worldwide, submissions from law firms and interviews with leading private practice lawyers, supplemented by a team of researchers who have considerable experience in the legal market. We are pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Ellis as Burness Paull's new managing partner, succeeding Tamar Tammes and working alongside Peter Lawson, who continues as chair. Mark brings considerable management experience to the role having led our market-leading corporate finance team for the last six years. He also previously sat as an elected member of the firm’s governance and strategy board. Peter Lawson commented: “Mark’s qualities and track record mean he is ideally suited to take on the role of managing partner and I look forward to working with him to deliver our ambitious growth strategy”. We have also made two further senior appointments. Lindsay Wallace, formerly general counsel partner, will now serve as head of sustainability, leading the implementation of our comprehensive ESG strategy as we progress towards responsible business and sustainability targets, including net zero emissions by 2050.    Jill Moore, who has dedicated her entire career to Burness Paull, succeeds Lindsay as general counsel partner, assuming responsibility for the firm’s governance and regulatory obligations. Macmillan Cancer Support provides vital services to families impacted by cancer, and this week we were proud to contribute by putting our baking skills to the test, hosting coffee mornings at all three of our offices to support their incredible work. Safe to say, “delicious” was the word of the day! A huge thank you to everyone who baked treats and to all who attended and donated. The generosity of our colleagues was also added to by the Burness Paull Foundation. A great morning for a truly deserving cause! If you want to find out more about the work of Macmillan or make a donation, you can do so here: https://bit.ly/47J0QIS

The Financial Conduct Authority has long had a focus on treating customers fairly and with the cost-of-living crisis pushing great swathes of the population into debt, customer vulnerability has come into specific focus. But what does vulnerability actually mean and how is the use of technology and its accessibility impacting financial services customers? In the latest paper in our Trust Economy series we spoke to a range of organisations in the financial services sector to hear their views on the use of AI and how it can impact vulnerable customers. Caroline Stevenson, Murray Cree and Jamie Gray also explain what FS firms must do to keep compliant and ensure they meet their regulatory obligations. Read our paper to learn more: https://bit.ly/3MYXCY7 Thank you to Robbie Homer-Plews, Rachel Curtis, Kirsty McKenna, Jan Buchan and Alison Rennie for their thoughts. Last week we had the pleasure of co-hosting the UN Global Compact Network UK’s Sustainable Development Goals Roadshow at our Edinburgh office, part of a UK-wide tour taking a deep dive into how businesses can embed the goals and see positive change.   The event highlighted the importance of collaboration in advancing sustainability efforts, with participants sharing valuable insights into both local and global sustainability challenges and the strategic actions needed for meaningful, long-term change.   Our commitment to the SDGs forms a key part of our sustainability journey blueprint and so this was a great opportunity to learn from others and see what more we can do.   Our Sustainability Manager, Maggie Stewart, has shared her key takeaways from the day, including the power of partnership and collaboration. You can read her insights here: https://bit.ly/3zwIkXy #SDGRoadshow2024 #Sustainability

Women and girls may make up more than half the population, but their health needs have historically been neglected by health researchers. Even today, women’s health accounts for only a tiny fraction of healthcare research funding, in spite of enormous unmet need. This troubling situation formed the backdrop to a pioneering women’s health event we recently hosted alongside the Scottish Lifesciences Association (SLA). It showcased the cutting-edge Scottish life sciences companies working to change the story on women’s health and highlighted the social and business benefits of doing so.
