About us

The Brompton bike was conceived as a product to help improve city living. It has established itself as the ideal choice for all those who are living or interacting with cities. The bike can be folded to a third of its size in a matter of seconds and is small enough to be taken on all forms of public transport. In fact, 42 Bromptons can fit in one car parking space! The Brompton bike was first designed by Andrew Ritchie in 1975 opposite the Brompton Oratory in South Kensington, hence the name. The first prototypes were all designed and built in Andrew’s flat and while they were rough and crude, the majority of the key design features were already evident, such as the pivoting rear triangle that allows the rear wheel to fold underneath. Andrew looked for support from various banks and bike manufacturers, but none were willing to support his dream. Julian Vereker, an entrepreneur and the owner of an early Brompton prototype, joined Andrew in 1985 and helped to provide the money which put Brompton into full time production for the first time in 1988. Fast forward to 2016, and Brompton now offers 16.5 million combinations on the bike, every one of which is still made by hand in London. It is now estimated that there are over 80,000 Brompton bikes in London. Three-time winner of the Queen’s Award for Enterprise, the company sells over 45,000 bikes in 44 countries around the world every year. Sales have been growing at a fast rate with the help of Brompton Junction retail stores in London, Barcelona, Munich, Beijing, Milan, Hamburg, Shanghai, Chengdu, Amsterdam, Tokyo and Kobe.

We're very pleased to say that we now have Brompton Bike Hire docks at both Sheriffhall Park and Ride in Midlothian and Kenilworth Station in the West Midlands. For just £5 you can hire a Brompton Bike and ride it into the city or take it with you on the train - the ultimate in multi-modal transport. Cllr Cassidy said: “As a keen cyclist myself, I think this is a great idea. Sheriffhall Park & Ride is an ideal location for commuters who might want to do the final part of their journey on two wheels. It’s also really easy to get onto numerous cycle paths from the park and ride for people to explore the area off road." https://lnkd.in/dhYJpMhh Cllr Jan Matecki, Warwickshire County Council Portfolio Holder for Transport and Planning, said: "We are thrilled to have secured this funding for the 'Unfolding Kenilworth' project. The introduction of Brompton Bike Hire at Kenilworth Station will not only enhance the connectivity of the area but also encourage healthier and more sustainable travel options for residents and visitors alike. This pilot project reflects our commitment to supporting active travel and reducing car dependency, and we look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on the community." https://lnkd.in/dVfnHjCh It's great to see so many council's supporting active travel and encouraging more and more people to cycle. You can find out more about how the bike hire scheme works online and let us know if you've used it in your journey in the comments. https://lnkd.in/dJxFuSfu

Today marks the start of Recycle Week in the UK and has given us the opportunity to reflect. Earlier this year, we made our first bikes with the world’s first 100% fully recycled aluminium wheel rims in partnership with Norsk Hydro , the first of which was showcased at our Brompton World Championships in London. This ground-breaking innovation is a major step towards our net zero commitment, where we work to blend cutting-edge technology with our mission to create a more sustainable future. So what else are we doing to help with our green credentials? In 2023 we reduced our metal scrap rate and continued to operate a powder-coating paint process that reuses paint from one frame to another and recycled 62% of waste at Greenford. Our brazing process is naturally water intensive so to reduce waste, we’ve invested in a water recycling system to reduce waste and pollution. There is always more to do in the future but we’re proud to be B Corp and continue to focus on making it possible to ride greener, further and with purpose. It was great to host the team from 'Let's Go Southall' this morning in our factory. After bringing in their Brompton bikes for a service, they were taken on a factory tour before their mechanics worked alongside our Brompton team to learn more about the nuances of our folding bikes and how to fix them. It's great to work alongside initiatives that match our business values - namely a belief in cities designed for people. For us, active travel and green space are at the top of our minds because they increase the well-being of people and the planet. Go Southall are working hard in the local community to encourage members to not only ride bikes but use them for commuting and feel safe and confident on the road. https://lnkd.in/epE-jdze Keep up the good work!

🚴♀️ Pedalling Towards Success, Together! 🚴♂️   At Brompton, we believe that teamwork goes beyond the office walls, and our colleagues recently took part in an exciting company cycling trip around Avignon in Provence, France! 🌳🚴♂️🚴♀️   Not only did we conquer new trails and climb a LITERAL mountain on our tiny but mighty bikes (not your vibe? Some of us did stay behind to do a wine tasting in Chateauneuf du Pape, and entertain a few gentler jaunts around the beautiful Provencal countryside!) but we also built stronger connections and fuelled our collective passion for wellness, sustainability, and fun. 💪   It's moments like these that remind us why Brompton is a great place to grow your career: a supportive, active, and vibrant community where collaboration extends from projects to pedals. Today, we unveil our biggest innovation in 50 years, our first ever 20" folding bike, the G Line. In 1975, Brompton inventor Andrew Ritchie created a new type of movement with the bike that folds down small – transforming how people move in and around cities across the globe. Fifty years after the most compact folding bike took to the streets, we've rewritten the rules again with the G Line, which offers the feel and ride of a ‘big wheel’ bike, while maintaining the convenience and versatility of our signature fold. Delivering comfort through an entirely new frame, all-new 20” wheels, and Schwalbe custom made for Brompton, tubeless-ready tyres to enhance the capability of the bike, the G Line is our latest engineering feat – creating a confident and balanced feel, all with the ease of its iconic foldable design.
