Improving health and wellbeing through evidence-based Lifestyle Medicine
About us
The BSLM aims to establish Lifestyle Medicine as central to health and wellbeing by promoting the prevention of avoidable lifestyle-related diseases. Imagine a world free from an ever increasing burden of disease related to living an unhealthy lifestyle; a world free from disease which is currently suppressing the wellbeing of individuals, straining society healthcare systems and driving inequality. The current management of lifestyle-related diseases is dominated by the use of pharmaceuticals, but this approach does not tackle the root causes of such diseases. The British Society of Lifestyle Medicine (BSLM) believes that using Lifestyle as Medicine is a more effective and sustainable way of managing illness. Lifestyle Medicine is not only simple and cost-effective, it empowers individuals to take their health into their own hands. BSLM is building a multidisciplinary network of healthcare professionals who believe in re-energising the healthcare system and reframing it away from disease towards health. We are a group who want to collaborate by sharing our knowledge of using Lifestyle as Medicine to build a reliable, evidence-informed resource which can help you and your patients to lead healthier lifestyles. BSLM warmly invites you to join an energetic, resourceful and creative society and to be part of a global alliance for sustainable healthy change. Let’s turn the tide of disease for the greater good of our patients, our communities, ourselves and our planet. Please visit www.bslm.org.uk for more information.

It’s great to see the MDU discussing the discipline of Lifestyle Medicine, the RCGP GP with extended role in Lifestyle Medicine framework and the ways you can become accredited including the British Society of Lifestyle Medicine Core Accreditation. They’ve described some of the definition of Lifestyle Medicine; “Lifestyle medicine is an evolving speciality within medicine. It focuses on using evidence-based techniques to support behaviour change, and lifestyle interventions to prevent and manage chronic disease.” However, the most important and exciting aspect of Lifestyle Medicine practice is supporting people to achieve sustained, drug-free chronic disease remission i.e. depression, Type-2 diabetes, metabolic liver disease, obesity, hypertension remission. Trials suggest this is achievable with multicomponent intensive lifestyle programmes. My clinical experience suggests this can be done using lifestyle medicine clinicians, group clinics, health coaches, social prescribers and mental health workers. 👉It’s this practice of supporting remission that needs indemnity the most as it involves careful down-titration or supported withdrawal of medications and deprescribing. Sugary/energy drinks must carry a health warning on the label around max daily limits just like alcohol. Lucozade toxicity? Coca-cola poisoning? I have seen too many cases of Type-2 diabetes being entirely caused by sugary beverages - once stopped, no Type-2 diabetes (literally within weeks or days). Also others where people, driven by thirst caused by raised blood sugar they quench with sugary drinks driving rapidly worsening Type-2 diabetes. Again, often reversed upon stopping sugary drinks and other sources of free sugar. 👉 Acute sugar toxicity should be a diagnosis we can record and lay squarely at the feet of the sugary drink industry. 👉 One example - someone presenting unwell following drinking daily 4x500ml bottles of Lucozade made by Lucozade Ribena Suntory and a litre of coca-cola made by The Coca-Cola Company. 👉 The max daily advised limit of “free sugars” is 30g/day. In this example daily consumption is around 128g just from free sugars 👉 This is not an unusual level of consumption in my experience as a GP who asks routinely about sugar sweetened beverage and eating habits. We need better labelling, raised awareness amongst the general public and their clinicians as well as government action to limit the sales of these products. People consuming this much sugar don’t need insulin, they need support to with sugary drink addiction. 🔔 🫑🥒🥬 🥑 For World Food Day yesterday, we have a blog piece for you! 🥑 🥬 🥒 🫑🔔 We've popped up our topical piece, which is very topical after our BSLM24 theme and conference, on "Technopathology and the rise of the ‘dumbphone’ – going against the grain when it comes to smart phones for kids" 💬 “The impact on children’s health and ability to learn is severe, low iron levels in a child’s diet reduces concentration and impacts on a child’s sleep, this is just one example of the impact of a poor nutritional intake. The stress from food insecurity often leads to anxiety and emotional difficulties.
