“Why do you bother photographing or filming from a helicopter when you can use a drone?” This was a question I was asked recently by a photographer, to which my reply was “how many times have shot from a helicopter?” His answer was “I never have”.  Mmm…I thought how can you be so dismissive of something you have no experience of and, more importantly, how many clients are missing out on the benefits? The thing is, we have been using drones since 2013 and we continue to love using them on every shoot to get content that is not possible to get any other way. But we also know the benefits of shooting from a helicopter. For us the mix of both is the perfect scenario. So to help explain the benefits have a look at this video of Jeff shooting from a helicopter. After watching and reading the points below, you may begin to wonder why more shoots aren't using a helicopter for aerials? Is it a lack of knowledge, a lack of experience, the perception they are expensive or not time efficient or a bit of everything? Anyway, here are few points to consider once you have watched the video… The camera, and more importantly, the optical size of the lenses capture much more light and more detail than a drone resulting in higher quality photos and video. Switching between landscape and portrait formats is almost instant. Not only does this allow us to capture one scene extremely efficiently it gives us the ability to be more creative and react faster to what we see, delivering a better result for the client. Not only can we switch between formats instantly, the same goes for the ability to shoot with different lenses to capture a wider range of content. Visibly, because the person shooting is actually in the air with a full 360 degree view they can see so much more than the narrow view presented from a drone monitor. When combined with the eyes of the pilot this gives us a unique understanding of the yacht, the weather and the complete environment. This means we are able to maximise the perspectives, the light and the wind to capture more compelling content. On the subject of weather, if the wind picks up and makes drone operation less than ideal, a helicopter will keep providing us a stable shooting platform. Restrictions on flying drones are increasing as authorities look to control their use. This can result in limiting what we can capture on a shoot. Whereas helicopter flight restrictions have remained the same for years. A helicopter flight time is approx 2.5hrs, most drones max out at 25-30mins in normal operating conditions, requiring a battery change, what’s more in a helicopter we can capture all the photo and film content we need in 45-60mins One more thing, not shown in this video is our film guy who is sitting behind Jeff, this allows us to shoot both video and photos of the same scene at the same time. This makes life much easier for the yacht and crew as we only need to do a setup once. With a drone it’s either one or the other.

FROM THE ARCHIVES: The original video walkthrough? I was recently going through the archives and found footage from one of our first ever yacht shoots. 21 years ago we thought this video walkthrough by following the crew was a pretty cool idea 😂. No fancy stabilising from the lens, gimbals or software just follow, shoot and edit. I love how many times the toilets are featured and don’t mention the music. 😩 It was actually one video of many that we shot that we then featured on a DVD of the yacht. (Look up DVD) The yacht was SY NAOS and it was shot in Auckland, New Zealand with Captain Ben Marshall
