"I like the idea that she'll remember it was her and Daddy, and that this was our time." Research shows that shared reading has lots of benefits for families, from supporting children to bond with their parents and carers to helping their speech and language development. We loved hearing from dad John about how he's seen this in action! Find more of his story here: https://lnkd.in/eRUS348p #SharedReading #StoryTime #ChildrensBooks #ReadingTogether

Our four #ReadingTogether proposals highlight what needs to happen to make sure no child misses out on the transformative benefits of reading. They are: ➡️ Embedding reading in the life of every low-income family. Research shows reading has immediate and long-term benefits, and we believe no child should miss out. Our programmes are designed to support and motivate families to get reading and should be available to all children in areas of high poverty and in pockets of deprivation. ➡️ Using shared reading to bring enjoyment and stability to vulnerable children. The benefits of reading can be particularly transformative for children experiencing vulnerability. But these children face particular challenges in building regular reading habits with their families, so our evidence-based programmes should be available to thousands more. ➡️ Helping antenatal and early years practitioners promote shared family reading. We know that when early years practitioners encourage parents and carers to share stories and show them how, they are more motivated and confident. Our support, guidance, tools and training should be available to all early years practitioners to help them make a difference. ➡️ Supporting primary school teachers to cultivate a love of reading. Research shows that shared reading drops sharply when children start school. We know teachers are real reading role models, so they should all be able to access our research, guidance and book recommendations to help them to spark a love of reading in their students. We're really excited that our great new #Bookstart Toddler and Pre-schooler packs which are part of our early years programme are now being delivered to partners! The packs have been designed to help families get started on their reading journeys, containing carefully-selected books to enjoy and activities to try. Partners who will be delivering the packs can find helpful tips, information, book recommendations and resources on our Storyteller Hub here: https://lnkd.in/eWYvMRaE #ChildrensBooks #EYFS #EarlyYears #StoryTime #SharedReading #ReadingTogether

It's so important for children to see their family life reflected in books - and to see what other families might be like, too. So we've put together a list of great reads which feature blended families, suitable for a range of issues. We're wishing our Waterstones #ChildrensLaureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce a very happy birthday! To celebrate, we're delighted to launch the #ReadingRights campaign corner of our website, where you'll be able to keep up to date with everything Frank is getting up to in his time as Laureate. The Reading Rights campaign is all about making sure all children have access to the benefits of reading, and Frank will be sharing what he's learning as he speaks to stakeholders, practitioners and more over the next two years.
