Our brilliant Waterstones #ChildrensLaureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce is on the look out for inspiring examples of sharing books and stories in the early years. He recently visited Meadows Nursery in Sheffield, discovering how they're supporting families and building community through storytelling. But he also learned about some of the challenges facing practitioners in the early years sector. Head this way to find out what he took from the visit: https://lnkd.in/eUdsveyc #ReadingRights #EarlyYears #EYFS #Nurseries #SharedReading #StoryTime #ReadingTogether #ChildrensBooks #Storytelling

We loved hearing from Sally in Cambridge about how she uses the rhyme cards in our #Bookstart Toddler packs with families! Our research shows that when our partners model how to share books and resources, it can help to build parents and carers' confidence and encourage them to continue reading together at home. For more from Sally about using the Bookstart Toddler and Pre-schooler packs, head over to our Storyteller Hub: https://lnkd.in/eMvFrWGy #EarlyYears #EYFS #SharedReading #StoryTime #ReadingTogether

We're really looking forward to taking part in The Social Work Show in Manchester on Monday. We'll be there with our brilliant Writer in Residence Patrice Lawrence, who will be leading a seminar about why shared reading matters for children from vulnerable family backgrounds. If you'll be attending the show, we'd love to say hello - come and visit us on Stand 11! https://lnkd.in/eaqd76Qb #SocialWorkers #KinshipCare #FosterCare #ReadingTogether #SharedReading

Research shows that sharing stories can support children's language development in the early years - and as an author and a Speech and Language Therapist, Lucy Rowland has seen this in action. Here, she explores some of the factors that can help to build these benefits during story time - from repetition to interactive features. We're also sharing how BookTrust's programmes can help to support speech and language, too: https://lnkd.in/eNQpd4YN #ChildrensBooks #StoryTime #ReadingTogether #SharedReading #SpeechAndLanguage #LanguageDevelopment #EarlyYears #EYFS

This morning at Stormont I met with several members of the Education Committee across three of the parties to discuss the recent reinstatement of funding for #BookstartBaby, the universal BookTrust programme designed to support and encourage families to read with their child as early as possible. Our research indicates that families who start sharing books and stories together early are more likely to develop a long-lasting shared reading habit. Wider research shows that getting families reading together from the earliest moments brings unique immediate and long-term benefits. Early shared reading supports bonding between children and their parents, stimulates brain development and improves wellbeing in families. It helps children to reach early speech, communication, language and other development goals. Many thanks to Peter Martin, David Brooks, Michelle Guy, Nick Mathison and Robbie Butler MLA for your time today. It was really encouraging to hear your enthusiasm and support for the programme, and I'm looking forward to meeting with the remaining members of the committee over the coming weeks.

📢 NEWS: Today we're publishing our research exploring how children's enjoyment of reading declines during primary school. And Waterstones Children's Laureate Frank Cottrell-Boyce says the findings concern him "greatly". That's because while 33% of 7-year-olds tell us they 'love' reading, that declines to just 25% by the age of 11. And our survey of teachers backs that up - around 48% of Early Years Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 teachers express concern over reading enjoyment levels in their class, but this rises to 63% of Key Stage 2 teachers. BookTrust's Director of Impact and Research Ruthann Hughes says: "The decline in reading enjoyment, despite teachers' hard work, is something we need to address. Shared reading, where an adult or an older sibling reads with a child, is crucial for fostering children's reading enjoyment. "Working with families to help them share stories together at home is time well spent by schools as it will positively impact the children's attitude to reading. It takes a whole community to make a reader." Yesterday’s #kidsconf run by The Bookseller was a call to action and a wake up call. My top 3 takeaways: 1) Kids need books to flourish. Government, take note: the Waterstones Children’s Laureate, Frank Cottrell Boyce, and BookTrust will be bending your ears about this. As will the signatories of the letter organised by Rebecca McNally. 2) Kids need books that reflect them, their families, their lives and our society. Look at the stats - 34.4% of pupils are Black, Asian or minority ethnic (as per the Lit in Colour slide). Jasmine Richards’s talk was vital listening for publishers. 3) Kids need illustrations. 7/10 of the top authors (see slide from Nielsen) either draw as well, or their books are heavily illustrated by someone else. Hence graphic novels/comics being so popular. Jamie Smart and all comic artists have known this forever. Let’s embrace change, widen the parameters of what a ‘good’ or ‘stretching’ book is, and get books into the hands of children in order to change their lives.
