Bloomsbury colleagues Ginni Arnold and Tash Payne were in Hastings this week for the latest round of author visits in the LitUp outreach partnership with the National Literacy Trust and University of Brighton Academies Trust. They were joined by wonderful Bloomsbury Children's author Katya Balen, who taught ~700 children across six schools all about mudlarking and creating stories based on the world around them. From treasures found during Katya's own mudlarking trips, the kids came up with adventures for the characters in her Thames and Tide Club series. Through the project, every child will receive their own copy of The Thames and Tide Club to take home. The project focuses on encouraging children in deprived areas - and places where literacy rates are extremely low - to engage in reading and discover that books are for them too!
