Street cleaner Paul Spiers is enjoying a well-earned holiday in Portugal. He won it in a competition after his employers refused to allow him to accept cash raised to send him on holiday. Predictably, we see the world through the lens of tax. So is there a risk that gifts of that kind create a tax charge? In her statement this week, UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves confirmed the Government’s plan to apply VAT to private school fees. From 1 January 2025, VAT exemption for private school fees will be removed. Any fees paid from 29 July 2024 (the date of the announcement) pertaining to the term starting in January 2025 onwards will be subject to VAT.
