This is the UK’s first “intergenerational care village”, where preschoolers and elderly care-home residents can spend their days together. It’s a model that researchers believe may boost the wellbeing of both young and old. In this experimental project in the heart of Chester, about 70 older residents — about three quarters of whom have dementia — live in care-home “households”. Another 30 are in independent living apartments. Each day they’re invited to spend time with the 28 children, aged from nine months to five years old, who attend a nursery in the lower floors of the same purpose-built five-storey complex

We are pleased to start the new week with some good news for Belong Atherton: a student #nurses project led by The University of Salford has made the finalist shortlist at the Nursing Times Awards 2024! 🧑⚕️ The village was invited to participate in research which is nominated in the Social Care Nursing category. Belong Atherton's support manager, Jemma Sharratt, shares more: "In collaboration with Dr Melanie Stevens and the university, the village took part in a pilot program for student Allied Health Professionals and student nurses to collaborate and learn in a multidisciplinary environment. "There was a weekly multidisciplinary team meeting for the #nursing students to share their learning and recommendations and positive changes were implemented based on the outcomes of the meetings. We have since incorporated aspects of this multidisciplinary approach to our learning environment. "Taking part was very beneficial and it had some great outcomes for our residents who were involved." Result due in autumn.
