Saab’s Autonomous Swarm technology used in landmark AUKUS trial. A large UK team, comprising 40 employees from Saab-owned BlueBear - A Saab Company and UK MOD Defence Science and Technology Laboratory (Dstl) personnel, demonstrated the ability to deploy interoperable AI within Autonomous Swarms of Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS).

Saab has signed an initial three-year contract with the UK Ministry of Defence, for the provision of support to Live Simulation systems with ILT-D (Instrumented Live Training), valued at £60M and options to extend until 2030. The ILT-D contract replaces the previous DFWES (Direct Fire Weapon Effect Simulator) contract. ILT-D supports high-fidelity systems that use a blend of laser and geometric pairing technology to simulate direct and indirect fire effects. This data-rich capability provides objective feedback which is used to inform the After Action Review (AAR) process and validate training. James Passmore, VP Director of Marketing and Sales, Saab UK said: “As Saab Training and Simulation marks 30 years of collaboration with the British Army, we are delighted that ILT-D is in place to support training for the next epoch. Could Al-Air be the future of Air Power? That is the question OCTO are seeking to explore, having funded a collaborative project to develop an alternative #novelpower system for Unmanned Aerial Systems #uas #uav The £250,000 contract, placed via Defence Equipment & Support (DE&S) Future Capability Group (#FCG) on behalf of Office of the Chief Technology Officer (OCTO) has been awarded to BlueBear - A Saab Company in Bedford, with their subcontractors Métalectrique of Plymouth, who specialise in highly novel Aluminium Air batteries (Al-air). Al-air batteries are an inexpensive, lightweight, and powerful source of energy. These single use air breathing fuel cells create a reaction between the oxygen and aluminium to create electrical power, and are highly recyclable. Christopher Hellier, OCTO Chief of Staff & Project Lead, stated: ‘’The value proposition of Al-Air is compelling. Even if one excludes the safety and environmental benefits, the dramatic increase in possible range, payload & endurance over traditional batteries for UAVs could be a leap forward in operational capability. An attractive prospect for the Maritime Domain is the #circulareconomy potential, with the possibility of regenerating and re-useing power cells onboard Royal Navy vessels of the future. If successful, the impact on the supply chain will be significant, reducing the burden of resupply and the associated vulnerabilities that our adversaries may wish to exploit. Through this collaborative project we seek to understand the possible future benefits to Defence, although there is likely a broad spectrum of applications beyond. When one compares Al-Air to combustion-based powerplants, the improved simplicity and reduced maintenance burden, without compromising range or performance, offers a future whereby platforms could be cheaper to buy & operate, more environmentally friendly, and yet more capable.” This proof of concept integration of an Al-air battery into an existing UAS is an exciting prospect, and reflects the UK Ministry of Defence & Royal Navy commitment to R&D, #technology, and wider #netzero efforts.
