Last week, the newly elected Labour government proposed two new employment law bills; the Employment Rights Bill and the Draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill. Set to be introduced within the first 100 days of the new government, we expect final drafts to be in place by October 2025, and implementation likely to be until October 2025 or April 2026. Though both are still in the early stages, we have summarised the expected changes and the impact this might have on employers. https://buff.ly/3WdTUOB

Inaccurate modelling and flawed economics is setting our financial system up for failure. In the face of a climate emergency, our central banks and financial institutions need to be better equipped at understanding the scale of the danger we are in and ensure that models and forecasts are based on accurate climate data. Luke Fletcher, Partner and Co-lead of Purpose & Impact, and Mark Campanale, Founder of Carbon Tracker, explore why the Bank of England should have its own Climate Science Committee made up of independent scientists and experts to address these issues. In the UK there is currently no protected characteristic of class, and it is not an area where employment law specifically intervenes to promote equality. So, what can you do as purpose driven business to achieve greater social mobility and class inclusion? Our team highlights the benefits of contextual recruitment, apprenticeship schemes and diversity and inclusion forums, in the latest update of our #RealiseYourPurpose series.

Social media can be a great tool for charities but it is important to have clear guidelines for staff and volunteers to effectively manage your social media presence. Charity Commission guidance is now clear that all charities using social media must have a social media policy. Suhan Rajkumar, Senior Associate in our Charity and Social Enterprise team, has been working with CharityComms and Amy Hanson-Reed (Arctic Comms) to set up a free social media policy template which you can use and adapt to your organisation. Based on policies from across the charity sector, our extensive experience and new Charity Commission guidance, the template is designed to be evergreen and outlines a number of tricky areas including trustee and staff’s personal use of social media. Find out more and download the template below.

In last week's King's Speech, the newly elected Labour government set out its intention to introduce two new employment law bills; the Employment Rights Bill and the Draft Equality (Race and Disability) Bill. Though still in their infancy, the proposals are likely to have significant consequences for employers, if implemented. Here's what we know so far.

“It’s been a busy few months since our last roundup. The highlight for me was the victory of the senior Swiss women in their successful challenge to the climate policy of the Swiss government. The decision in Verein Klimaseniorinnen Schweiz and Others v. Switzerland was the first time an international court ruled that state inaction related to climate change violates human rights.” Leticia Jennings, Partner and Head of Dispute Resolution & Litigation, and our litigation and public & regulatory teams cover recent strategic litigation developments in our latest roundup. Catch up on the updates below.

A new model form search and imaging order is expected to be introduced in the coming months by the Civil Procedure Rules Committee. So how did we get here and what are some of the key issues litigators and their clients need to bear in mind? Two of our experienced Supervising Solicitors, Robert Oakley and Alex de Jongh, break down how imaging orders work in practice and consider what the future may hold in our latest update. https://buff.ly/3WCNU3D Bates Wells can provide a team of experienced female and male Supervising Solicitors to supervise the execution of search and imaging orders throughout England and Wales.
