Group CEO at Barts Health NHS Trust and Barking, Havering & Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust

One of the most interesting meetings I attended recently was actually a training session. I learned a lot and was taught some handy tips I can put into practice in my day job. Hundreds of colleagues at Barts Health will be offered this opportunity over the coming months and I hope they find it as valuable as I did. It is part of our sexual safety campaign and designed to help us become active bystanders against unacceptable behaviour in the workplace. What’s different about this training is that it empowers those who might be nervous about openly confronting misconduct, by deploying a range of simple tools and techniques to intervene beyond taking direct action. The facilitator impressed on us how some people will persist with inappropriate jokes, unpleasant banter or even unwanted touching if they think they can get away with it. Yet the reality is that it is not “just banter”, or “just a compliment”, or “just part of the job”. It is sexual harassment, and that is wrong. Our latest staff survey told us too many colleagues had been at the receiving end of conduct at work that blatantly contravenes our collective WeCare values. I am still shocked by the raw statistic: one in 15 members of our staff said they had experienced unwanted sexual attention at work in the previous twelve months. This is particularly significant because the law is changing shortly to reflect changing attitudes in society. From next month there will be stronger legal protections against sexual harassment in the workplace and employers will be under a new duty to take reasonable steps to prevent it. Comments or conduct that some may still believe is acceptable at home or among their friendship groups will simply not wash at work - especially if targeted at anyone covered by the protected characteristics: age, disability, gender, marriage, pregnancy, race, religion and sex. As signatories to the NHS sexual safety charter we are already taking steps to implement its key goals. We are building a culture of openness here that allows individuals to discuss sexual safety and sexuality freely, as well as report any incidents whether involving staff, patients or visitors to our hospitals. As Group Chief Executive of Barts Health, I am proud to reaffirm our zero-tolerance approach toward unwanted, inappropriate, or harmful sexual behaviours within the healthcare workplace. This is an issue for all of us in healthcare, as national surveys demonstrate, so we as NHS leaders must continually ask ourselves what more we can do change these unacceptable behaviours and any workplace culture that allows them to flourish.

Redevelopment Director, Alastair Finney and Head of Infrastructure, Allan Harris welcomed Labour MP Calvin Bailey MBE MP on-site at Whipps Cross Hospital as contractors progress with the ‘groundworks’ phase for the first of two new multi-storey car parks, a period that also includes improvements to site drainage as part of wider plans to prevent future flooding. This is such an exciting time to be working on this amazing project and once this initial phase is completed, the work of installing the concrete staircases and erecting the steel frame of the building will begin, meaning we’re one step closer to delivering your multi-storey car park and your hospital. 🌟 Exciting Day at Whipps Cross Hospital! 🌟 With construction at Whipps Cross under way, Sarah Broadhead from Ground & Air, who specializes in developing high-performing teams, facilitated a session between the Whipps Cross Redevelopment Design and Development team and construction partners to formulate a “Project Charter”. The purpose of the meeting was to define the project mission, the behaviours needed to support that mission, and how progress will be measured. The collaborative spirit and positive energy everyone brought to the table was truly remarkable with constructive discussions and innovative ideas being shared amongst the teams. These contributions have enabled us to build a strong foundation for our future projects. #IHP WT (UK & Europe) AECOM Ross Quality We are excited about our potential as a team and look forward to continuing our partnership. Together, we can achieve great things and drive our goals forward with the same passion and dedication. #TeamWork #ProjectCharter #Innovation #Collaboration #HighPerformance #NHS #Construction #Redevelopment #ProjectManagement #MSCP #FutureWhipps
