This week, the National Police Chiefs' Council (NPCC) published a statement which outlined the scale of violence against women and girls (VAWG) in England and Wales. With an estimated 1 in 12 women victims of violence every year, the size and complexity of the problem is growing – and the challenge facing police forces is significant. Understanding risk as early as possible in these circumstances is important, so that forces can work with partner agencies to implement preventative measures and focus on protecting victims before harm escalates. But with 3,000 offences reported each day, this is extremely difficult for resource-stretched forces. Technology can provide part of the answer here, enabling police forces to better analyse their ever-expanding and complex datasets and assess risk in a timely way, augmenting human decision making. We’ve been preoccupied with these data challenges within policing for a long time, which is why we created our Intelligence Lead Assessment Service (ILAS). Earlier this week, our Head of Futures Matt Boyd talked through ILAS and how it’s successfully being used within a number of police forces to support risk analysis. Watch the video 👇

As Theresa Palmer, our Global Head of DE&I highlights, there are many alternative routes into tech besides traditional higher education. Our research found entry-level IT roles and apprenticeships to be just as popular as degrees. Our Chief Technology Officer Robert Merryweather and ex-RAF Squadron Leader, Steve Knight, spoke to the Daily Mail about our new Battlespace Management and Intelligence System (BMIS). Powered by #AI, the technology aims to drastically reduce decision making time by analysing huge quantities of data from various sources to quickly help those on the frontline identify and respond to threats. It was emphasised that while AI will provide this support, the final decision will always be made by human commanders. Last week ahead of #FIA2024, our Head of Secure Space & Key Accounts, Prof Markos Trichas, spoke at the Australian British Chamber of Commerce’s Defence Catalyst event – which brought together defence ministers, primes and strategists from across the UK and Australia to discuss a range of topics, from AUKUS to #space defence and cyber resilience. Markos joined a session on ‘space and defence’ where he spoke about threats to the space domain, why working together is key to resiliency and the need for further investment in space, especially in sovereign capabilities and skills. He also joined an interesting panel with Babcock International Group, HEO and the Space Industry Association of Australia, chaired by the Australian Strategic Policy Institute. Some great insights were shared, with the importance of collaboration firmly at the centre of the discussion.

One of the most precise ways to guide munitions is to ‘paint’ targets with a laser device, which they lock on to and follow the beam. A lot of the time this is done by military personnel, who need to get close enough to the target to see it – often at great personal risk. We’ve now shown we can do this from a small Uncrewed Air Vehicle developed by an SME, Sentinel, on to which we’ve integrated a laser target designator and connected it to our military mesh network to share target data and timing over the air. This has the potential to spare personnel this dangerous role, as well as paint targets from a greater range and whilst moving. Read more 🛦 http://baes.co/F4Oe50SIgJ2 #FIAS2024
