#BreakingNews - The three nations of the Global Combat Air Programme (GCAP) – UK, Italy and Japan – are unveiling a new concept model of the next generation combat aircraft at Farnborough International Airshow, which opens its doors at 10:00am tomorrow. Exhibiting at the show together for the first time, the three GCAP government partners and their lead industry partners will showcase the significant strides we are all making to progress the delivery of a truly next generation combat aircraft. Engineers from across BAE Systems Air, Leonardo and Mitsubishi Heavy Industries are working together under a collaboration agreement on the design and development of the future combat aircraft using a range of innovative digital tools and techniques, including computer based modelling and virtual reality to evolve the aircraft’s design during its concepting phase. In August this year it will be 50 years since the first prototype aircraft XX154 took flight from Hawker Siddeley's Dunsfold aerodrome and gave birth to what would become the most successful and proven fast jet trainer, Hawk. From these beginnings, Hawk has gone on to train more than 25,000 pilots across the globe for life in a fast jet cockpit and today it remains the flying classroom for air forces from the US to the UK, the Middle East to the Far East. To mark the global success story of Hawk, the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) staged a special anniversary fly-past featuring aircraft from air forces across the world - and who better to capture it than probably the most recognisable Hawk operators, the RAF Red Arrows? We are excited to be working alongside the Royal Air Force (RAF) and Red 6 to evaluate the use of augmented reality to help increase the number of frontline fighter pilots. Under a contract awarded to BAE Systems, we will conduct an in-flight demonstration of the Advanced Tactical Augmented Reality Systems (ATARS) on a Hawk TMk2 aircraft later this year. Hawk, the world’s most proven and successful advanced jet trainer, is the flying classroom which has trained more than 25,000 pilots for life in a fast jet cockpit with air forces across the globe. 🚀 The Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon Display is always a highlight of an air show, but this year’s performance at the The Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) was even more special. This year, the jet was powered using a blend of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and normal fossil fuel and we were delighted to support making this piece of air show history possible. Ian Muldowney, Chief Operating Officer at BAE Systems’ Air sector, said: “We all have a responsibility for sustainability and we continue to collaborate with the RAF and the wider defence industry in achieving our goals to reduce carbon emissions. “We are proud to support the RAF Typhoon Display Team in its landmark performance at this year’s show.” ⛽️ Find out more: http://baes.co/AzKp50SGyI9 Eurofighter Typhoon

A programme of ground-based testing has been completed on a Royal Air Force (RAF) Typhoon test and evaluation aircraft equipped with the advanced new European Common Radar System (ECRS) Mk2 radar ahead of flight trials. The work was undertaken by engineers at BAE Systems’ flight testing facility in Warton, Lancashire, supported by teams from Leonardo UK, which has developed the radar at its Edinburgh and Luton sites. This included electromagnetic testing in a unique anechoic chamber. Group Captain Matt D’Aubyn, Typhoon Programme Director, Royal Air Force, said: "Embodiment of this prototype new radar into the test aircraft is a positive step on the continuous evolution of Typhoon’s control of the air capabilities, maintaining its sovereign Freedom of Action and preserving its technological advantage." The radar, contracted by the UK MoD’s procurement arm Defence Equipment and Support, will support RAF operations in the most challenging situations, equipping pilots with the ability to suppress enemy air defences using high-powered jamming and engage targets whilst beyond the reach of threats.
