Our chief data officer Johanna Hutchinson did not follow what many may think of as a conventional route into a career in data and technology. From studying biology and psychology at university, working as a primatologist in the jungles and rainforests of Central Africa and Brazil to discovering the power of statistics at the Office for National Statistics, these experiences gave her important transferrable skills that saw her playing a key role in the UK Government’s Covid response. Johanna recently sat down with Madeline Bennett for ComputerWeekly.com to chat about her fascinating career so far, the ever increasing importance of interoperability and diversity in data and why the defence sector is well placed to drive significant progress in the field. Observing Earth from space allows us to forecast the weather, monitor the environment, navigate and communicate. It is also essential in the world of defence 🛰️ Satellites loaded with sensors provide militaries with vital information, enabling them to understand what is happening far beyond the horizon. Our Head of Space Strategy and Market Development, Elizabeth Seward, recently spoke with Neil C. Hughes from the Tech Talks Daily Podcast about what we’re doing in space, including our Azalea satellite cluster which will get actionable intelligence where it needs to be quicker and our launch of the UK’s first ever space degree apprenticeship with University of Portsmouth. Featured in this month’s edition of HowItWorks mag – Neil Appleton, CEO of our Malloy Aeronautics Ltd. business shares his insights on the role of heavy-lift drones, large enough to take on many of the tasks currently done by helicopters, at a fraction of the price. 🏅 Congratulations to Chris Boyle who has been recognised in the King’s birthday honours, receiving a British Empire Medal for his services to Defence. A welder, an active Trade Union member and a volunteer safety representative, Chris has played a critical role in establishing and maintaining the safety of those in shipbuilding for 41 years. He holds meaningful knowledge of health and safety legislative requirements and how they’re applied to support the building of complex warships for the Royal Navy including most recently supporting our Naval Ships business to establish a Covid Action Plan in 2020 - a significant milestone in ensuring the safe return to the workplace of our manufacturing employees supporting the continuation of defence shipbuilding during the pandemic. On a voluntary basis, Chris has supported Trade Union members acting as a Treasurer of the Welders Department Fund and Joint Shop Steward Fund, an ambassador for the business Code of Conduct along with engaging employees and providing advice and guidance on how to apply the Code in their everyday working life.
