𝗠𝗦𝗙𝟮 𝗥𝗮𝗻𝗴𝗲 𝗧𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗻𝘀 𝗶𝗻𝘁𝗼 𝗢𝗗𝗦 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁 Whilst at a major distillery in Scotland to perform a range test between MSF2 sensors and the Machine Sentry gateway, we noticed that a motor and gearbox unit driving a mixer paddle was oscillating. We quickly took a video as evidence and reported this back to the reliability team. This video is a perfect example of how a simple visual inspection of an asset can identify potential failures. The next steps are to perform an ODS (Operating Deflection Shape) test to determine the cause of the movement and develop a solution, as this mixer is both critical and difficult to maintain due to its location within the facility. Oh and the range test we were there to complete? Done and dusted in under 15 minutes. The existing 36x MSF2 sensors installed across several levels in a building measuring 75m x 50m were all connecting to the gateway as soon as it was powered up and located next to the control room. The range and reliability of the Machine Sentry® Fixed 2 sensor and Machine Sentry® gateway can only be described as phenomenal. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗺𝗼𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗩𝗶𝗯𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗣𝗿𝗼𝗯𝗹𝗲𝗺 𝗶𝗻 𝗙𝗶𝘀𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗠𝗲𝘁𝗲𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗣𝗶𝗽𝗲𝘄𝗼𝗿𝗸 AVT Reliability engineers successfully identified a Thermowell Vibration Resonance Problem in Fiscal Metering Pipework at a Gas Storage Site. Following a report of significant vibration and high-frequency noise on a Fiscal Metering pipework, AVT Reliability's Asset Integrity Division investigated using a combination of practical vibration measurements and theoretical ‘Likelihood of Failure’ (LOF) calculations as given in the Energy Institute: Guidelines for the avoidance of vibration induced fatigue failure in process pipework. The sleuth instinct of our engineers questioned the mismatch in measured vibration versus the calculations based on process data and historical drawings. Querying the Thermowell drawing with the supplier who delved into 10-year-old records revealed a major difference in length between the manufacturing route card and the customer’s as-built drawing. Recalculations showed completely different results with a high LOF. A close correlation with the vibration measurements meant that the engineers were confident Thermowell resonance was occurring at certain flow rates. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗢𝗶𝗹 𝗦𝗮𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 During routine lubrication services at a distillery, AVT Reliability Lubrication Technician David McKeen inspected the oil-filled bearings before recommissioning the asset for start-up checks.   Upon inspection, it was discovered that the bearing seals had failed, allowing significant amounts of water to contaminate the oil and cause the bearings to corrode.
