You're inspirational! In April, over 500 of you took on the iconic London Marathon to raise over £1.2 million. An incredible, awe-inspiring number. This money will help fund vital lung health research and make sure we can provide expert advice and support when people need it most. Thank you 💜 If you feel inspired to join our team, applications for next year’s London marathon are now open: https://orlo.uk/pUgAz

Our analysis of the latest NHS England admissions data (2019-2022) shows there are around 16,000 emergency asthma admissions for children every year in England. Deborah Waddell, one of our helpline nurses, spoke to the Nursing Times about the health impacts of air pollution on children and how nurses can help children with asthma mitigate their risk. https://orlo.uk/FUiEw

Bronchiectasis is a lung condition more common in the UK than Parkinson’s or MS, yet instead of being a household name, we know very little about how it develops and progresses. Incredibly, the world’s first dedicated treatment (brensocatib) for bronchiectasis has just shown positive results in its Phase 3 clinical trial – meaning that this new drug reduced flare-ups and slowed the progression of the condition in people taking part. This research led by Professor James Chalmers and the team is an amazing leap forward for people with lung conditions, but we can’t stop there. We need to build on the momentum of this incredible discovery. That’s why this #WorldBronchiectasisDay we’re raising awareness with LifeArc of the impact of this lung condition. By working together, we can understand how best to invest in research and make the most of the real opportunity to change the way this condition is treated and managed.

Yesterday we hosted our Volunteer Conference. The ceremony is a great opportunity to show tribute to our exceptional volunteers who have demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication in serving their communities in the past year. The awards selection panel had a difficult choice to make after reading a total of 17 volunteer nominations detailing the amazing efforts and achievements of our volunteers across the organisation. We want to thank all our volunteers and congratulate the winners! Special shout out to Lucia Ciolanel for her incredible hard work in organising the day. Thank you to all our speakers - Mike McKevitt, Ian Jarrold, Brenda Naluyima, Leanne H, Caroline Fredericks, Victor, Eloise and Sarah Curgenven! ✨

Imagine a reality where every breath is a struggle. For 12 million people in the UK, who will develop a lung condition in their lifetime, there’s no need to imagine.  Every 5 minutes someone dies from a lung condition, yet public research funding for respiratory research has been chronically low. Saving and improving the lives of people with lung conditions starts with an accurate and timely diagnosis, something that can only be achieved with more research and more funding to develop the understanding and tools needed.  Read our collaborative report with LifeArc to hear what people living with a lung condition, clinicals, academic, innovators are proposing to transform the future of respiratory diagnostics and save lives. https://lnkd.in/excBjS8w X ALUK diagnstics&utm_id=

This month our Research and Innovation Team held an event in Dr Hannah Durrington's lab. Together, they held a Respiratory Research Showcase at The University of Manchester to highlight the fantastic work going on to better understand, diagnose and treat lung conditions in the North West. They were joined by Afzal Khan CBE MP and Jeff Smith MP who after hearing about the importance of good lung health had the chance to get a real time assessment of their own lungs as well as hear from Asthma Lung UK trustee Victor Cholij on why respiratory research is so important – ‘My breathlessness doesn’t just affect me, it affects my wife and children. We need some hope.’ This lifesaving research is under threat, respiratory research is chronically underfunded even though its crucial for transforming the nation’s lung health. Especially for people from the poorest communities, who are more likely to struggle with a lung condition. We’re so grateful for Hannah and her team, Grace Rutland, and Ian Jarrold for putting together a fantastic showcase of why this work must receive the funding it needs to continue. People with lung conditions depend on their work for a better future. Thank you.

This week, we had 15 of our new starters take part in our Corporate Induction. This was an opportunity for them to learn about our organisation and how each of our teams contribute to our overall strategy. Each of our directors shared more about their directorates and the impact the work they do has on our supporters. The new starters also had the opportunity to meet their colleagues through structured group exercises and a team lunch. This helped to foster initial connections and provide a sense of collaboration. One of the exercises was to share what their initial thoughts of Asthma Lung UK were, some of the themes included were we are bold, approachable, ambitious and passionate about the work we do.
