Today we’ve signed a joint letter to Chancellor Rachel Reeves ahead of the Budget, calling on her to protect investment in R&D. Despite financial challenges, there is a risk that short-term thinking now could damage long-term growth and ambition.

We’re proud to support the new All-Party Parliamentary Group for Life Sciences – this newly formed group has just called on the Chancellor to support the UK’s life sciences sector in the upcoming Budget. Following its inaugural meeting, the group emphasised the importance of protecting government funding and tax reliefs that drive investment in this vital industry. With Labour's plan, "A Prescription for Growth" and a draft Industrial Strategy on the table, there’s a strong push for policies that will foster innovation and bolster the UK’s position as a global leader in life sciences. The APPG is supported by eight life science organisations spanning industry, charities and a National Academy. In 2023 alone, medical research charities invested £1.7 billion in R&D, while the life sciences industry contributed over £9 billion—supporting countless jobs and advancements in healthcare. Kit Malthouse MP, chair of the APPG, said: “The Life Sciences sector holds out an incredible promise that the UK can be at the forefront of humanity’s battle with disease and at the same time build a 21st century knowledge-based economy. The All-Party Group embraces every aspect of this exciting sector and we hope it will play a part in maintaining the UK as a science super power.” With our support, the APPG will continue to champion policies that enhance research and commercialisation for the benefit of NHS patients and the UK economy! 💡🔬 #LifeSciences #Budget2024 #Innovation #Healthcare #UKEconomy

We were delighted to welcome Pete Wilton to our most recent COMMSunity meeting, to talk about misinformation. Thank you to everyone who joined us, and especially to Pete for speaking on this complex and evolving topic. If you work at one of our member charities and missed the session, there's still chance to join COMMSunity to recieve notes and to join future meetings. Find out how, and about all of our networks and groups on our website: https://lnkd.in/edfWhEdg
You know that feeling: you've prepped *everything* for a talk and then on the day a new article drops... 😅 Recently I was invited to give a talk on #misinformation to the COMMSunity network run by the Association of Medical Research Charities. It was a pleasure to discuss some of the lessons I've learned from our work at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, U. of London attempting to combat misinformation around things like the WHO #pandemic treaty, MMR and #measles, and UK #abortion provision. People seemed genuinely interested in my thoughts on how, with limited time and resources, #communications professionals might incorporate counter-misinformation techniques into our everyday work. Of course, that morning a very interesting new article on misinformation dropped I didn't have time to include in my talk! The article on the LSE Impact Blog (by Sander van der Linden, Ullrich Ecker & Stephan Lewandowsky) explores how misinformation is a threat to society. It's a great summary of misinformation research with lots of useful links and makes a compelling argument that we dismiss the importance of both the problem and research into it at our peril. Think the sharing of misleading information and outright fake news isn't having a huge impact on all our lives? Read this and think again. #disinformation #PR

It was great to be part of this panel last week at the Labour Party conference. Our CEO, Nicola Perrin, was part of the panel, which discussed lessons learnt from COVID, and how the UK has all the ingredients to be a powerhouse for research.
Moderna was delighted to host a fringe event at the Labour Party Conference earlier this week on the subject of ‘Innovation in Life Sciences: A Mission Driven Approach.’ It was great to discuss learnings from the COVID-19 pandemic response, and how the Government can position the UK life sciences at the heart of British economic growth. Thank you to Steve Bates OBE FMedSci, CEO of the Bioindustry Association for chairing the discussion and Chi Onwurah MP, the Chair of the Science Innovation and Technology Select Committee, Former Deputy Chief Medical Officer, Jonathan Van-Tam, Nicola Perrin, CEO of the Association of Medical Research Charities, Dr Charlotte Refsum, Director of Health Policy at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change and Stuart Carroll, Director of Market Access and Policy Affairs at Moderna for taking part. We look forward to working with you all to take the recommendations of this discussion forward, and to positioning the UK life sciences at the heart of mission-driven Government! #ModernaUK
