An interesting read from NCE ☟ Our Chair David Giles was among those who provided information for this look into the condition of our local roads. Eurobitume Mineral Products Association #asphalt #localroads #maintenance #ALARM #futureofroads
Local roads in the UK are at a crisis point after years of underfunding, which has left authorities unable to maintain them to the required level. NCE spoke to Tarmac, Asphalt Industry Alliance, Farrans Construction, Leicestershire County Council and Association of Directors of Environment, Economy, Planning and Transport (ADEPT) to learn more Full story:

A great opportunity from Rees Jeffreys Road Fund for highways and transport professionals that are looking to acquire extra skills. There’s five weeks left to apply for the Ready for the Future grant, which intends to fill the skills gap and support the future development of our roads. #highways #skillsdevelopment #FutureOfRoads #transport
Rees Jeffreys Road Fund is launching a new grant scheme to help address significant skills gaps in the highways and transport sector. Ready for the Future grants are intended to support existing highways or transport professionals to acquire skills that will be necessary for highways in the future. Support is available to around five highways or transport professionals each year, with grants to grow or acquire skills currently in short supply or under-developed in the sector. The grants are aimed at excellent candidates who would not normally be able to afford to study or have study funded by their employer. Applicants can apply for a grant to cover the cost of course fees, up to the value of £10,000. There is no “prescribed” list of courses that could be funded, instead the Trustees are interested in applicants explaining why their proposed course of study will have future impact and benefit for the highways and transport sector. The closing date for applications for a Ready for the Future grant is 5pm Friday 4th October 2024. For full details about how to apply visit the Rees Jeffreys Road Fund website https://lnkd.in/ewGZ2gJX Chair of the Trustees Ginny Clarke said, “At Rees Jeffreys Road Fund we believe roads really matter to all of us, whether we’re making journeys as drivers, passengers, walkers or wheelers. The professionalism, knowledge and expertise of those working in the highways and transport sector is therefore vital to ensure that roads work well for everyone.” “We are keen to continue the life work of our founder William Rees Jeffreys by supporting today’s highways and transport professionals to acquire the skills necessary to improve the long-term capability in the sector, and ensure our roads are fit for the future. If you are a dedicated highways or transport professional, whatever stage of your career, we’re interested in hearing from you about the new skills you could acquire that would boost your contribution to highways or transport for the future.” #highways #transport #skillsdevelopment #FutureOfRoads Steve Gooding Andy Graham Dr Suzy Charman Greg Marsden Hilary Chipping Mark Kemp Glenn Lyons Dr Joanna White Leon Daniels OBE David Tarrant

The publication of the first independently verified asphalt EPDs by Mineral Products Association Asphalt, one of our partner organisations, is an important milestone for the industry🎊 Asphalt is already one of the most sustainable construction materials on the market and the new EPDs provide a consistent method of quantifying a range of sustainability indicators, in particular the product’s carbon footprint. Local authorities and contractors will be able to use them for evaluating the environmental impacts of #asphalt as we all work towards meeting net zero carbon objectives. ASPHALT EPD ROLL-OUT: MPA Asphalt is delighted to publish the UK's first verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) for four generic #asphalt product types used on UK #highways. Published today, the new ‘reference’ #EPDs for asphalt #road materials enable effective and reliable comparisons to be made on each product’s whole life environmental performance using consistent methodologies – providing much needed clarity on sustainability indicators such as a product’s carbon footprint. New RAC data shows that road condition is now the top concern for drivers, but the challenge of improving the local road network goes beyond simply filling in potholes; it underscores the need for proactive asset management underpinned by long term funding horizons. https://lnkd.in/eiYMCBFq

We support this review of transport priorities. But to deliver an integrated network more must be done to link operational spend to new and previous capital investment. That’s why, when it comes to local road maintenance, we stand by our call for long term surety of funding.
"I am determined that we build the transport infrastructure to drive economic growth and opportunity in every part of the country, and to deliver value for money for taxpayers. That ambition requires a fundamental reset to how we approach capital projects – with public trust, industry confidence and government integrity at its heart.” Read Transport Secretary Louise Haigh's full response to the Chancellor’s statement on the state of our public finances and what it means for the delivery of new transport infrastructure 👇
