Coastal cities have long thrived as bustling hubs of trade and culture. But with climate change altering our shorelines, we face new challenges. Rising seas, fiercer storms, and erosion demand urgent solutions. At Hunter's Point South in NYC, we’re leading by example. This former industrial zone is now a beacon of sustainable development, harmonizing with nature to guard against floods and rising tides. Hear more from Vincent Lee, Principal, on Hunter's Point South and explore the actions were taking to build resilience into coastal cities: https://lnkd.in/g4B9brDS #WeAreArup #ChangingCoastlines #UrbanResilience #ClimateAction #HuntersPointSouth

How do you grow a green economy? In this episode of Sustainable Forces Podcast, our host, Dr Michelle Dickinson (MNZM), chats to David Miller, Managing Director at C40 Cities and Brice Richard, our Australasia Strategy and Insights Leader, on how together we can capture the USD$10.3T global green economic opportunity. David shares: “There are building blocks to green economies happening in lots of places in the world, and if we can build successfully on what’s happening somewhere and make it happen in more places, I would argue that you really can build a green economy.” Together, we will learn: • What a green economy is • How to capture the opportunity • Ways to implement green initiatives • Easily adoptable opportunities for organisations Listen and subscribe here: https://bit.ly/4cCefUC #GreenEconomy #SustainableForces

In a new film produced for us by BBC StoryWorks in collaboration with the World Ocean Council, I explained how we transformed a former industrial site in New York City into Hunter’s Point South, creating a space that serves as a blueprint for sustainable development worldwide and will protect and enrich lives for generations to come. The journey to creating this resilient waterfront in New York City started with a multi-agency visioning workshop where we collectively identified drivers of change and brainstormed ideas on how to embed sustainability at Hunters Point South. Nearly a decade later, the vision was realized through technical excellence and the waterfront park has become a model for urban ecology. And along the way, the project was even tested by Superstorm Sandy…and passed… demonstrating how smart design and nature-based solutions can improve resiliency. Regenerative design aims to restore the planet’s health, revitalise biodiverse ecosystems and renew nature. In a world with so many ideas, technological advancements and solutions, what actions can organisations and individuals take to get involved in regenerative design and help restore our relationship with nature? Listen to our Sustainable Forces podcast episode, ‘Can design repair the planet?’, with Jennifer Lenhart, PhD, Cities Lead at World Wildlife Fund and Josef Hargrave, our Global Foresight Leader, to learn how: https://lnkd.in/dP7EfSNd #SustainableForces #RegenerativeDesign

As our work continues on California High-Speed Rail Authority’s initial 171-mile segment in the Central Valley, we are thrilled to share the latest renderings for the stations in Merced, Fresno, Kings Tulare, and Bakersfield. Working collaboratively in a Joint Venture with Foster Partners, the project team recently engaged in a series of public ‘open house’ sessions with local communities, businesses, agencies, and other key stakeholders, which will inform the development of the station designs. The JV is overseeing the architecture and engineering for these new Central Valley stations, which will serve as models of design for others planned along the entire 500-mile Los Angeles/Anaheim to San Francisco system. Guiding Peru out of of the risk zone. 80,000 residents in the city of Trujillo will now be protected from flood risks, through this life-changing project. We’ve partnered with Mace, Gleeds and the Peru National Infrastructure Authority Autoridad Nacional de Infraestructura (ANIN), to design and create a 1.2km basin, a 20km canal and stepped discharge structure, to hold, clean, slow and direct the safe flow of rainwater from the mountains, to the sea. Watch the latest ‘Faces of Change’ mini-documentary, which details this next phase in supporting the acceleration of flood defences, schools and health facilities in Peru. This tells the story of the community partnership, cultural heritage and lasting legacy of the El León Gully project, the first of 17 river defence systems to be delivered through our collaboration. We think outside the box to explore new ways of cherishing and retaining the origins, historic past and unique stories of our most treasured buildings and spaces, while simultaneously regenerating and reinvigorating them for future generations to come. In our new video series, ‘Outside the Box’ we deliver a mystery box to Ian Gardner, Arup Fellow. Inside the box, Ian finds an array of old photographs of one of his most significant projects – revitalizing Pancras International Station. Describing each photograph, Ian explains the process by which he and his team used the station’s heritage to inform its urban regeneration. The aim was to preserve the Victorian station’s character. Originally, the Victorians had to come over a canal immediately north of the station, so the platforms were elevated creating a huge undercroft underneath at street level. One of the Eureka moments was deciding to revitalize the undercroft, making it a public space that had not existed before and giving transparency through the station. For Ian, this project demonstrated how creative thinking, an appreciation for heritage, clever technical analysis, and a desire to combine old and new, enables us to create thriving, rejuvenated spaces for the benefit of local communities, businesses and visitors alike. Arup Fellows are exceptional practitioners with a deep commitment to delivering excellence for our clients on our projects today, while helping our clients prepare for opportunities and challenges in the future.
