Midges (Culicoides spp) are notorious, particularly on the west coast and Highlands of Scotland, but here’s one munching on my arm on the east coast of Scotland on Sunday! Various species can be found throughout the UK, and in fact, throughout the world. They can be an incredible nuisance for us - even in parts of Australia, Scandinavia, Canada and the US. In some countries they also transmit disease including bluetongue (a virus which causes huge economic losses in sheep farming), African Horse Sickness and Oropuche - a virus affecting humans (symptoms similar to dengue), recently highlighted as being on the rise in the Americas in the press. Midges are certainly one to watch on the global stage, beyond nuisance. At Arctech Innovation we are innovating new technologies that repel and trap midges and other insects.
