We're thrilled to see the publication of the UPP Foundation’s recent essay collection in memory of Bob Kerslake. Director Ben Humphries has contributed a fantastic thought piece, 'Building net-zero campuses to support the community' amongst a cohort of academics and leaders in the higher education sector. Together with Tom Yearley, Ben makes the case for universities as leaders and influencers for a zero-carbon future: "Universities, such great places of teaching and learning, have the power to be didactic in the way that they are built and operated, to be catalysts for change, and to demonstrate a holistic, sustainable approach. Moreover, they are the perfect civic venues to bring people together to tackle the climate crisis, and to define a beautiful, zero-carbon future." About us
Architype Ltd is an architectural practice working from offices in Hereford, London and Edinburgh. The UK’s leading architects for sustainable buildings, we design with an energy and commitment that changes lives for the better, by creating places and spaces that have a positive impact on the people who use them, and on the immediate and wider environment. Our remit is broad and always exciting. Whether we are working on a private residence or a factory, a hospice, school or university, we know we’re influencing people’s lives and that the buildings we design will be used for many years to come. It’s our conviction that we should push at boundaries, that there is a better way. It’s our intention that clients are liberated and empowered by the process of working with us and by the buildings we produce for them. Wherever possible, we carry out a period of thorough consultation, an immersion in the issues and needs of everyone who will occupy the building. We involve them in the process of describing their ambition and developing a plan that is informed by everyone’s contributions. This ensures we deliver the building they have a right to, a place they will be proud of. We love what we do - the profound sense of engagement that comes with each new project, the union of great design and credible sustainability, the pleasure we can bring, and the ripple effect each completed building has on society.

We are celebrating #EODay today by reflecting on a series of vision sessions we recently held in our studios across London, Hereford and Edinburgh. Being #ProudlyEO means looking to the future, and the huge role our co-owners play in decision making to shape our next 40 years. As our External Trustee Helen Moreton notes, "EO Day in the UK gives employee-owned businesses the opportunity to celebrate being part of a wonderful movement and sector. It also gives us the opportunity to reflect upon the difference EO makes to our organisation and its people. As Independent Trustee for Architype, I am very proud to work with this business, who truly put their Co-owners at the heart of what they do." Thanks to everyone who took part and you can read more about our discussions and vision over on our blog. https://lnkd.in/epEjEGZk eoa

It was a great honour to speak at the European Healthcare Design conference yesterday with Architype's Mark Barry and Medical Architecture's Bob Wills exploring future healthcare design. The pair presented our collaboration on the Cavell Centre Passivhaus Community Health and Wellbeing Hub, a blueprint for the transformation of primary and community care facilities in England. This pioneering model presents Passivhaus at no extra cost, while significantly reducing carbon, as well as energy bills and other costs - around £291,000 a year - at a critical time for the healthcare industry. The scheme is also shortlisted for the 'Future Healthcare Design' at tonight's awards, recognising projects that demonstrate the potential for outstanding outcomes in masterplanning, place making, wellness, pandemic preparedness and sustainable development, in alignment with the strategic requirements of the healthcare provider to transform their services within the wider community, regional or national health system. We look forward to hearing the results later on! What a week! Emily Partridge, Diana Chirescu and Raina Armstrong from our Digital Collective have had a great time at Digital Construction Week 2024 once again. Some key takeaways from a week of interesting talks and seminars include: 📋 Chase new tech and ideas, but implement them gradually to keep top quality standards. 🖥 Treat your data like an asset - why do we know more about the state of our office furniture than our documentation? 🤝 Collaboration is key! It was also great to catch up with Graham H Stewart, Robyn Rooschüz, Johnathan Munkley and Women in BIM - as well as many more collaborators and innovators. Our team left with a lot of food for thought and look forward to exploring more in the days to come.

What to do before you hire a skip! Architype's director Ben Humphries explains how a circular economy approach for the exemplar retrofit Entopia building - with funding from Envision Energy - for Cambridge Institute for Sustainability Leadership (CISL) resulted in innovation, ingenious thinking and a beautiful work space for staff and Canopy (CISL) occupiers. With thanks to excellent collaborators including ISG and Eve Waldron and multiple supply partners, it shows what is possible when high aspirations are set from the outset and championed by all involved Wendy Bishop John French Anna Nitch-Smith.
