Are Pharma truly living their patient centricity value? This week a few of our AMICULUM rare disease specialists met in Manchester for a business update meeting. As part of the meeting we got down and dirty and experimented with AI using Copilot, we did a workshop on how we can create truly meaningful client partnerships and got the paints out for some creative working sessions where we discussed what our AMICULUM values mean to us (see image for our painting skills). On the topic of values, the part that really stood out to me was a session that we had with Beacon for Rare Diseases who talked to us about some of the excellent work that they do to support patient organisations. As part of our discussion with Emma Damian-Grint and Faith Walpole one of the things that came up is ‘Are Pharma truly living their patient centricity value, or is it just lip service?’. In my experience some companies do this much better than others. For some it is built into their DNA and for others it is merely a tagline on their website. This got me thinking, can we do more? As agency partners how can we support pharma to enhance their patient-centric approach and ensure a tangible difference is made to the lives of patients? Do we have a core role in ensuring we connect our medical, marketing and access clients with their patient engagement and advocacy colleagues earlier to ensure patient insights and needs are being considered at the start of projects? Do we need to get closer and work more with patient advocacy functions to ensure we are hearing patient insights firsthand and steering projects based on this? What more can we do? Can pharma do more? Companies are set up as commercial entities, all working towards their own goals, but our industry exists to make a difference to lives and with this in mind is there space for pharma companies with shared interests to come together and collaborate to provide non-product related support for patients? There will always be barriers to this but is there space when considering best practices in disease monitoring, setting up registries or even ground level support for setting up patient organizations. The latter being particularly important in the area of rare diseases where people have very limited disease information and are often left setting up their own organizations from their kitchen worktop in order to ensure that no other person is left in their position. #raredisease #values #pharma #medicalcommunications #patientcentricity #patientsupport #collaboration

Developing a product to prevent or treat a rare disease involves unique challenges from hard-to-identify and dispersed patient populations for clinical trials through to undefined endpoints and regulatory requirements. While each condition individually has a small population there are over 30 million people affected by rare diseases in the US alone. It’s therefore encouraging to read today that the FDA is establishing a Rare Disease Innovation Hub to connect with the rare disease patient and caregiver community, to enhance collaboration across FDA centres and to advance regulatory science. We look forward to seeing how this new initiative can accelerate treatment and prevention options across rare disease populations #raredisease #fda #patientcentricity

Who do head mics make you think of? Madonna? Britney Spears? Dua Lipa? Whoever it is, we had a great time yesterday doing our best impression of pop stars (without the singing or dancing thank goodness!) at the London hub of the AMICULUM annual event. It was brilliant to see everyone at Marble Arch in real life, and to connect with our colleagues in hubs across the UK, Asia and US to talk about our vision for the future and all the great stuff that's already happening to make that a reality.
