Nicky, one of the people we support in Liverpool, is an incredibly kind person and is always looking for ways he can make a positive difference through charity work and fundraising. He has now set himself a new goal to raise money for a brilliant cause, Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Charity, by completing a sponsored walk - and already has over £100 in sponsors. Well done Nicky... you are a true inspiration! Today is National Schizophrenia Awareness Day! Did you know, in England, approximately one adult in every 100 will live with a diagnosis of schizophrenia? Today we're shining a light on what it means to live with this much misunderstood and often stigmatised mental health condition. Swipe to hear from Justine, a Registered Manager in one of our mental health hospitals, as she explains the symptoms, causes, and treatment options for schizophrenia. Over the last 7 months we have been working hard to identify and attract the top talent in the sector to support us to deliver our 3 year growth strategy at Alternative Futures Group. I am delighted to say, we have made a number of great appointments who share our vision and passion. I am proud that our commitment to our people (those we support and employ) is helping to build awareness of the amazing things we do at AFG as we look to Positively Impact More Lives. We look forward to sharing information about all our new colleagues in due course as they join AFG over the coming months. Happy South Asian Heritage Month! To mark the occasion, our colleagues and the people we support have been celebrating the traditions and culture of South Asia. This wonderful party was organised by our frontline colleagues at one of our supported living properties in Burnley. The people we support enjoyed a delicious lunch and were delighted to come together to celebrate diversity and South Asian culture. We welcome the new trials to investigate a four-day working week which will be presented to the government next year. In April we reduced the working week from 37.5 to 35 hours and helped to support almost 300 of our colleagues into working a nine-day fortnight. Kirsty Murphy Chartered MCIPD, our Chief People Officer, said: “At AFG we recognise how hard our teams work and know that health and wellbeing in the workplace is of paramount importance. We will be exploring further improvements in consultation with our team members as we constantly strive to create the best possible working environment.” Read more on the new four-day week trial here: https://bbc.in/3LpjWcK 4 Day Week Campaign #FlexibleWorking #FourDayWeek #NineDayFortnight #Government #SocialCare #Health #Wellbeing #Culture

In the King's Speech today, the UK government committed to reforming and modernising the Mental Health Act so that it is "fit for the 21st century". We welcome this announcement and are delighted that mental health will finally be given the same attention and focus as physical health. However, we recognise that social care was not mentioned during the King's Speech, and it was almost completely absent from the General Election campaign too. In addition to the Mental Health reform announced today, we're calling on the new Labour government to make social care a top priority and provide adults with learning disabilities the focus and funding they deserve. We are delighted to be a part of the Nelson and Colne College Industry Board for Health, Science & Social Care! Earlier this week, we met to discuss the content of the College curriculum specifically around Health & Social Care, to ensure that it meets the needs of our workforce and prepares learners to deliver high standards of person-centred care. It was great to collaborate with many organisations from across the social care sector. We look forward to offering further advice and guidance, as we aim to co-create future Health & Social Care curriculums. #HealthandSocialCare #SocialCare #LearningDisability #MentalHealth #College #SkillsDevelopment
